Advice about buying a Video MP3 player

Hey, I'm thinking about buying a video mp3 player, basically want to watch stuff at work during my lunch hour.

What I really want to do is be able to rip stuff from my DVD collection into Avi/Divx and put them onto it. Not whole films but clips from them or a whole episode of The Simpsons say. Yes I know what your going to say but not interested in buying a phone that does that just what a video mp3 player that I can put my existing mp3s on and rip clips/stuff from dvd's to avi/divx and play those.

'THINKING' about (and I use the word thinking strongly) about this one

but I'll shop around won't buy the first one I see. £100 is about my price, but any advice from people would be nice

Personally, if you are going to use a portable for a lot of video watching, I'd go for a bigger screen than that.

Which puts you in full on PMP territory.

I've got a Cowon A2 which fits the bill for what you're after nicely. (and still has the best rated battery life - 10 hours - for video on the market ..... best that I'm aware of anyway). You're not going to get a PMP along the lines of the A2 (or Archos 5/6 series) for £100 though.

Having read a quick review of the Sansa View, it does sound like a decent enough little player. Screen is getting a bit long in the tooth though, only 64k colours, most newer ones are 16m colours. It's also a bit fussy about video types apparently (so says this review). But, for £100, you could certainly do a lot worse. If you plan to rip all your own video, not such a problem as you can just make sure you do it in a format that'll keep the player happy.

Alternatives worth looking at in a similar price bracket:

Some of the Sony 8gb players
Cowon D2
Creative Zen
iRiver Clix

All very good players in their own right.
