Sound problem
SteveBru

I am having lip sync problems with my HD programmes via Sky HD.

I have adjusted the delay and on SD format the sync is fine but when I tune into a HD programme I am experiencing a delay on the lip sync.

I am putting my audio through a Panasonic Home cinema sysytem connected via an optical lead.

Can anyone clarify what I am doing wrong or how I should have things connected up.

I appreciate any comments / advice anyone can give.

Kind regards

Steve

I would guess that the delay is caused by the extra amount of time it takes for your TV to process a HD signal than to process an SD signal - so the sound is being processed by your amp regardless of what picture is being sent to your TV, but your TV is struggling to keep up with the sound when it has a more complex picture to display.

There are adjustments you can make with the digital audio via optical - but any delay you introduce will be apparent for both HD and SD transmissions. So, unless you also set your Sky HD box to output everything in (say) 1080i, so your TV thinks that everything it receives is in high definition and therefore should suffer from the same delays whether showing HD or (upscaled) SD material, you might find that your HD transmissions play fine, but your SD transmissions have delays in the opposite direction - that is, the sound is running behind the pictures.

Alternatively it could just be Sky doing their normal balls-up of screwing around with the audio most noticeably on the movie channels, so that the sound and the picture are almost never in sync with each other.

I noticed the film I was watching was out of sync, i thought it was my amp then i put it on the telly speakers and it remained the same, it must be sky.

Some av amps have the ability to delay audio by a few milliseconds, for a more cinematic experience. You could welll be able to alter it. Check your hifi manual.

Have you adjusted the lip sync on the Panasonic, on the Sky HD box, or both?
