I think you'd struggle to find a DVD player for more than £100 these days. Most cost between £15 and £30. So, it is really down to what features are you looking for? Upscalabilty? Ability to play DivX movies, MP3s, JPEGs etc? Coaxial and/or optical audio output? Colour? Size? Ease of making region-free?

And they have plenty more well over £100.

Tons of low end gear under £100 but also lots of mid to high end gear, some of which goes waaaaaaay over £100. If it's upscaling and sound quality you're interested in, you'll need to spend more than £100 before you start seeing a great deal of difference in quality. The Oppo players are more than £100 but not up there with that Nad one. Around £150 to £200 will get you a decent Oppo player and they're supposed to be really good all rounders.

Depends what you want it to do to be honest.

If you want as much compatibility (divx etc) as you can possibly get in a budget player, the Philips DVP5980 for £40 in store at Currys just now is an exception buy.

I'm planning to order a Xoro HSD8420 which is similar to the Philips DVP5980 but with a few more outputs and better divx handling. Only problem with the Xoro players is you need to ship them in from Germany. No-one in the UK stocks them. Still get one (including shipping) for well under £100 though. I'm expecting to pay around £50-£60 for mine.

i view the pioneer dv400,the one i have,as worth close to £100 for features, plays divx smoothly from usb pen drive,or external hard drive, supports subtitles for divx.
Good picture quality,very good reviews.
Plays dual layer discs,+r,-r ,mp3 dvds [dvd full of mp3 folders].
I find the only downside is it doesn't have an optical audio connection.
Some cheaper players have a few more features but all of the above features is all i need.

Agree with sancheeez about the Philips DVP5980.

I got the 5960 model from Amazon a few months back for £40 and it plays anything I throw at it. Asume the updated model would be even better
