There's no such thing built into a tv as far as I know. I've a similar model, another 40" Sony with 1080p. This has a 24p cinema mode, which will give a truer playback of films fed to it via DVD etc. The upscale functionality will be provided by an upscaling dvd player (many around) or by a PS3 if you have one. This tv certainly doesn't have any sort of in-built dvd, let alone an upscaling one.

It doesn't have a built-in DVD (no decent makes do), but (like ALL LCD's and Plasma's) it does have a built-in scaler - and probably a better one than the vast majpority of up-scaling DVD players.

Upscaling DVD players is just the latest scam to sell things to gullible customers

All HD TV's have a built in upscaler & this TV has one of the better ones

All LCD and Plasmas have scalers as already mentioned, they aren't specifically for DVD.

Some DVD players/recorders have upscalling capability which means the TV doesn't do the upscaling as it's already been done by the DVD player.

As to which is better is down to the equipment.

I dare say on the Sony there'll be little in it.

The upscaler in this TV is quite highly regarded so it should do at least as good a job as the average upscaling DVD & perhaps better. If you want to get even better quality though look at an Oppo Upscaling DVD, these are excellent & beat most of the others including Denon but expect to pay £169 for the 981 or £319 for the new 983.

Waste of time and money, don't buy a DVD player just because it claims to be 'upscaling', your TV already does it, and probably just as well or better.

Spending a LOT of money on a very expensive one 'may' give you a slight improvement - but Sony TV's already use extremely good scalers (which is why they cost more than others, and perform better).

Another option is to buy a BluRay player - this will allow you to watch true HD films, and they have excellent upscalers as well.

Sorry Nigel but I can't agree about Blu ray upscalers, it is widely known that the upscalers are well below par with even a modest upscaling DVD player the new upcoming Sony BD350 is supposed to be an improvement but even then less than a typical upscaling DVD. At the end of the day Blu ray does what it's supposed to do i.e. playing a BD disc at great quality, anything else is a bonus! Ironicaly the format that lost (HD DVD) had great upscalers form either Anchor Bay or in the better XE1 REON HQV I have both BD & HD DVD & whilst you can watch DVD on BD it would not be my choice
