Denon AVR3806 amp/ DVD - no sound!!

We had a Samsung DVD player that has gone belly up. Now replaced with a Phillips HDMI DVD player. The trouble is, although we get a picture, there is no sound.

Our set-up is Pioneer plasma screen, Denon AVR3806 amp and the usual surround speakers.

The radio works still, so the audio stream from the amp is working properly - but not with the TV or the Phillips DVD player.

My husband thinks it's something to do with the fact that Sansung has an optical fibre (?) and the Phillips uses a HDMI cable. Sorry, we're not technically minded so that idea might be way off!

So the question is how do I get the Denon AVR3806 amplifier to play the DVD and TV sound?????

I would start with the DVD player.

I presume you still have the optical cable as used with the old Samsung DVD? If there's a socket for it on the back of the Philips then hook up the cable as you had it before with the old DVD. Select the DVD input on the amp.

Next, grab the Philips manual and look up the section to do with the DVD player setup menus. You might need to make some changes in there to activate the digital audio out. HDMI will still work for picture, but you need the DVD player to give the amp a digital audio signal so that you can hear your DVDs.

To get TV sound through the Denon amp you'll need a set of phono leads (red and white usually). Have a look on the TV if there's an "audio output" socket. If there is then hook up the phono cables. Next, plug the other end of these cables in to a spare input socket on the amp; you might have a socket marked TV or AUX. Select the correct input, turn the TV volume down and turn the amp volume up until you can hear the TV signal.

If there's stil no sound then turn the volume down and check the amp's manual for it's setup menus. Good quality amps like your Denon often allow signal inputs to be assigned to different buttons.

I suspect like Chris Frost says you will need to assign the input for the Philips to the HDMI socket, i.e. the input which you used for your DVD is most likely assigned to Optical 1 or 2 etc. so you now need to point it to the HDMI socket which you have the philips plugged into. Check you manual, on my 3805 it is under "Assign Inputs"
