Richer sounds should beat the av63 package price by £10 according to the website so it may be worth asking as you may save some money.

High Def audio is possible by suitable hdmi connection )not all hdmi connections on av amps support this) or via 5.1 (or more) analogue connections. Optical & coaxial digital connections do not support HD audio.

Decon has answered this for you but i'm new to it all too (coming from a DVD home cinema) so you're not the only one lol

Tell you what, you good people here, you certainly know your stuff.

Yamaha and Onkyo Amps are the best around at the mo, and wont break the bank either.

Mission speakers are a pretty good buy too, shop around you might get a second hand pair for about £100 for floorstanders.

Hope you find what you looking for.

Yeah I second that it's helpful to have so many people knowledgable on this matter.

Think I am going for the AV63 package for £199 as it willbe good enough for what I want in terms of price and sound.

I used to have a hifi with dolby pro-logic then went to an argos 5.1 surround for about £50. lol

This will be a world apart in terms of sound and quality etc

I bought one of those cables as you suggested and it came today and i got the speaker set too (though not got the amp yet) - but i am confused as the back of the sub doesnt have one of those plug points.

Any ideas on waht cable i should buy for it?

It also came with over 70ft of speaker cable, and it feels alot thicker than the one i have from screwfix too

ASlso, what is the cross over and level for? What should i have them set at?

I thought RCA but i wasnt sure about the cable

Thanks

You need to connect the sub cable to the Left Line Input on the back of the sub, the other end will connect to Sub Out on the amp. It will fit.

The crossovers job is to filter the low frequencies from the main set of speakers and send them to the sub. The Denon has a manual crossover and will control this area so all you need to do is turn it to AVLFE (MAX).

Level is the volume, when you start setting it all up you will need this at about half volume to start with, then adjustments can be made from there.

Once you get the amp I can guide you through the setup if you wish.

Set up advice would be great m8.

When you say the left line input, do you mean the white "L" one? what about the red Right one? do i just leave that blank?

Theres also switches on there, that dont even cover in the manual i got so im lost on those too lol (but im sure u can help when i get the amp)

The white one yes, the other input stays blank.

Other settings.

Power - On (best setting)

Auto places the sub in sleep mode when it's not receiving any low frequencies, the problem with this setting is as soon as the frequencies start to come through it can miss the early ones, avoid.

Off speaks for itself.

I have always left my sub on and never had a problem, though this is a personal choice, select which setting you are most comfortable with when not in use.

Phase - 0 (Denon has room EQ)

Voltage selector 230v.

Regarding setup, the Denon has what you call Auto setup and Room EQ. You will get a mic supplied with the amp, once you have made all the speaker connections all you will need to do is plug the mic into the front of the amp and get the onscreen display on the TV, select Auto setup/Audyssey and the amp does the rest, you will be prompted throughout the setup, all very easy but will run through it in more detail when you are ready.

Auto setup sets the speaker levels, distances, crossovers and delay times. Audyssey Room EQ sets each speaker so it's best matches your rooms acoustic environment and can take into account multiple seating positions. It equals out the frequencies which reduces the likelihood of an overly bright or boomy system.

If you ordered the Denon from Superfi they will send you an email notifying you your item has been dispatched, they will also give you a tracking number where you can find out where the item is and when you can expect the delivery.

Not long now - I'll keep an eye on the thread just in case you need some advise.

If you are anything like me I'd be searching through my DVD collection lining up a movie marathon for the weekend.

If they are anything like their amps they will certainly be good value for money.

What Denon did u go for?

I know I have asked but would this be better than the Yamaha 363 that i have been looking at?

This is NOT a good idea, as the two cable types will have a different construction and impedence and you won't be able to tell which is better or worse.

Speaker cable lenghts should be of the same type and construction and of equal lengths to the fronts, sub and center. Use equal lengths of cable for the sides and the rears.

Fair do's.

If I remember right, I'm pretty sure mine are wired up that way. More by luck than judgement I suspect, , but I'm fairly sure they are.

Looks like the Tannoys came with plenty of suitable cabling though so should be OK.

Yeah, it came with 72 feet of cable, and it seems good quality too. Thick.

And yeah, i do plan to have a DVD marathon soon lol - but i have a few movies from sky movies and anytime on my box i'd like to watch too with glorious 5.1 surround! (i wonder if sky HD will ever go to 7.1 surround)

I didnt know that, thanks for that advice. I will make sure they are the same for the rear and same for sides. Should i just tuck all the spare cable for one of the sides down under the carpet or something? (one way is shorter than the other)

I bought a pair of speakers from Superfi not a Denon, it was mclarenf1 who has just bought the Denon AVR1708.

To answer your question, the Denon IMO would be the better amp than the Yamaha.

I don't think there's any reason why Sky couldn't deliver 7.1, HD pictures and HD audio, it would have to be over HDMI though, but seeing they aren't allowing even 5.1 over HDMI I think we are in for a long wait.

They could give us 6.1, this can be carried over optical. I have seen one movie that has triggered my amp into 6.1 mode, I don't know if this was an error or it was a true 6.1 broadcast, the movie was Final Destination 3

Only your own ears can tell you the answer to that one, you'd need to audition both units to make that decision (preferably at the same location and, therefore, under the same acoustic conditions). Coming from an all in one unit to either of the receivers listed would be a quantum leap in performance.

Is there a technocal physical problem with that or do you think its software? As id love sky to give us the full HD experiance from the box. So far, im still waiting in for the amp lol

I think it's software myself all that's needed is an over the update. I can't fathom out why they haven't addressed this before now. It can't be that difficult as the V+ box does 5.1 over HDMI.

Somewhere in the future I can see the HD box giving us HD video and audio, how far in the future I wouldn't like to say.

Have the other cables arrived?
