In what way would filming in a different country be experimental or risky?

If the series was produced by an american production team it would be, but i don't see anything which suggests it would be.

Surely we can forgive the Yanks for one poor TV Movie? Just look at Doctor Who's crimes against America:

Nicola Bryant putting on a whiny American accent.
The supporting cast of The Gunfighters putting on appalling American accents.
The supporting cast of The Daleks in Manhattan putting on egregious American accents.
Stubby Kaye as a crass American in Delta and the Bannermen.
Dolores Gray as a crass American in Silver Nemesis.

Doctor Who owes America!

Sorry it would totally be -the Doctor on US streets -US locations -US characters...the scope is totally 100% there for marmite.I'm not saying it could not be done or theres no place for it in a full Who series where if it flops it will just be one dropped stitch in the series picture-but in the context of this article they are suggesting so much more and i'll be so disappointed and feel let down with all concerned if they have even considered what the paper suggests..

A bit of common sense at last.

Just because an episode might be filmed in America it in no ways means that the style, format, humour, emotion will change from any of the new Dr Who's we have seen, it is just a different setting, nothing more nothing less, so why not?

It is no different than setting a story in Pompeii.

There were no cast of Americian accents in Pompeii ...

Set in Utah (though not filmed there) many American accents abound...

Actually most of the American parts (if not all) where either played by American, or actors who have played Americans in a number of other productions.

Think you are missing my point though it's not the accents it's the combination of accents and location-it really would be a pure marmite risk.I don't have a problen with a US episode not at all -but for what the paper suggests surely you agree it's not even remotely suitable or believe anyone at the top at Who even thought of it .. they would never finish 10's journey with a few specials i'm sure of that too much to be done ..

I don't think it will happen either, but your objections to the principle of an American set episode still do not make any sense.

i'm not objecting at all -I just think it needs to be part of a full series in case it's not that popular thats all .

I for one hope that they do go filming in America, send the Doctor back in time to Woodstock to meet some laid back aliens who get high on pot smoking Hippy brains or something.

London as a destination is getting a little bit old, to say that the Tardis can go anywhere in time and space, it seems to end up in London rather a lot, so do the aliens for that matter, everyone knows that aliens only ever visit America To be honest I'd love to see the Doctor Land anywhere other than London, how about Birmingham or Leeds or Whitby (he could meet Dracula and find out he's an Alien)

The trouble is that with today's digital effects anywhere can be made to look like almost anywhere else, so its kind of hard to justify going anywhere, the New York double episode was quite convincing to say that it was mostly shot in Wales.

Besides, if they REALLY wanted to set the stories in America they'd film in Canada like the Americans do for their Science Fiction/Fantasy series.

if any episode ARE filmed in america then there will be american accents as it would be stupid to fly over brits to put on whiny pathetic fake accents, but then again if hugh laurie is free then he could do his perfect yank accent if he gets a casting nod

There are indeed a number of British actors working in the US portraying Americans. Look at Jaimie Bamber as well (although technically the character isn't American, the accent certainly is)

The training and experience available to actors in Britain is considerably better.

Can you see the point of stories filmed anywhere other than GB? Were City of Death, Arc of Infinity, Planet of Fire and The Two Doctors all pointless?

I just meant why film in America - what would be the reason? With CGI etc. Pompeii however worked brilliantly, but the cost of filming in America? Obviously, I have no idea what that would be, but I can't imagine, with the cutbacks, that the BBC have the budget for it? I said nothing about pointless stories.

I haven't really given my feelings on the issues being raised due to the possibility that two specials will be made in America, mainly because of the source of the claim.... News of the World ....so the possibilty of it actually happening is low.....very very low....


However if it does happen, I have no real issue with it at all, all it will be is a story taking place in America, like Fires of Pompeii was shot in Rome....

And if there is an American assistant, well then it will still be a one off, or two off in this case, as I am more than convinced that RTD is not going to lumber any of his creations on Moffat....

I don't think it will be to appease the American audiance in risk of losing the prime British audiance, like I said before, RTD is more than aware of how well DW is known there...

If it is happening, it will be just the Doctor landing in America, bumping into the potential assisstant, having the adventure, then saying goodbye....the end....and we don't see the Doctor untill the next special or next series depending when these specials are aired


Some people seem to be scared that it will be the TVM all over again, personally there was nothing more American about that than there was of the Daleks in Manhattan and Evolution of the Daleks....its just that on both counts it was the stories that failed to impress the majority( I personally enjoyed both), rather than because they were "too American"

If you had you would have noticed that they have already had episodes set in the US.

What's tiresome is that there are so many other countries in the world - why not go somewhere else if they want a change.

I don't think filming an episode in the U.S. equates necessarily with DW becoming American. People have filmed successfully "on location" without loosing their national identity. I've even vacationed outside of the U.S. and still maintained my "Americaness" without much risk. (Though I do admit I did come away from those sojourns with a renewed appreciation for the "jackass-factor" of our current adminstration.)

DW is British beyond a few accents and its filming locale. I would suggest that nothing quite demonstrates the uniquess of a culture as its contrast with another. The notion of the Doctor landing in America a time or two, or even perhaps having an American assistant for a bit, might be a welcome turn for heightening the very Britishness (and the most lovable of qualities) of the show.

Actually, yes! The foreign settings added very little to the stories, they all just seemed like an excuse for the crew to have a jolly! Unless you're a Peri bikini fan, then I'm sure there's a couple of points of interest there.

To be fair I can see the rationale of going to Paris for City of Death, at least it is part of the story (Mona Lisa etc). JNT said he worked out it was cheaper to do one episode abroad a season so thats why they did it.

The other three totally pointless The Two Doctors was the most pointless of course
