I don't think he's playing it (EDIT: I think re-reading it, that's what you were implying ). I think he believed that Memphis would accept being up, and understand Dan is using him as a pawn, in a sense.

Now Memphis is - understandly - getting a bit irate about this, he's suddenly realised he's not only cracked his alliance at the first attempt, but has also left a whole great deal to chance. Too much for the Rennyglade's (except maybe Renny ) liking.

Or the smartest move? Wait until you see how it plays out.
