Sad to read just now on the BBC Sportsday page that Alex Hay passed away on Monday after a battle with cancer. A fine commentator from a golden era.

I notice that ESPN will be showing hour-long highlights of the Open each night from Thursday to Sunday. I think Setanta used to do this, and when they did, they just took the BBC commentary feed and used BBC graphics. I wonder whether ESPN will do likewise, or whether they'll use their own commentators and graphics, seeing as they're showing the event live in the United States.

They had highlights last year, and used the ESPN US commentary then

Yes he commentated for a bit today Jim Nantz is the main CBS commentator on golf.

He introduces the butler cabin thing at the Masters presentation. I think he does American Football in the States as well

Sam Torrance has indeed left the BBC. They dropped him from their Masters coverage this year so he was just left with The Open. He decided to leave and pursue other avenues.

It's generally around those times that Peter is working for ESPN on the American coverage Darren. I think he works something around 2:30 to 5:30.

It is a bit ironic really that with The Open being the BBC's biggest golf event it's the one Peter Alliss does less in.

Yesterday Hazel came on air from the studio about 12 so I would guess today would be similar

Ah thanks. I'm not sure what other people think, but I actually prefer the BBC team to Sky. With the exception of mark james I think they are pretty good, especially Andrew Cotter and Hazel.

Mark James just sounds fed up doesnt he ? I wish they would consider getting Monty on board. Being very impressed with him.

Re - the golf

I popped the red button on at 735 when BBC2 stopped live coverage for a round up and there was a different voice doing the last few holes, he was on his own. Voice sounded familiar but not sure who it was. Any ideas please ?

Could of been Sky's Steve Beddow, he was on the red button doing the latter holes earlier in the day.

I don't know if this happens often, but Radio 5 Live's reporter at Chelmsford for the Essex v Kent Twenty20 Cup match is Radio 1's Greg James.

Julian Tutt has done some stuff like that over the past few years, possibly could be him
