Never thought about that, but that's probably the reason why.

Benny Ricardo is an American sports announcer. Primetime brought him over when they scrambled a team together for Khan v McCloskey and they were impressed.

The Primetime chief was in Boxing News the other week stating that there is a shortage of British boxing commentators outside Sky, which is hardly surprising with a lack of boxing coverage in general.

I would like to hear Eurosport's Steve Holdsworth do a big PPV fight though, if the fight was crap and you'd wasted your money he'd make sure to tell you so.

Cheers for the info. Yes there is a shortage of boxing comms, so it is quite surprising Holdsworh hasn't moved up the pecking order. I quite like his style, yes he does tell it how it is, I would put Holdsworth third, behind Darke and Rawling in the UK, so it does surprise me that he has never really progressed past Eurosport.
Another question, whatever happened to the guy that used to do the Screensport boxing commentary with Barry McGuigan? He was quite decent, but sadly I can't remember his name.

Think you mean Dave Brennar. He was working on BBC World the last I heard. Has a cracking voice for boxing commentary.

EDIT: Or David Brenner to be more accurate. Looks like he is now hiring out villas in Spain.

He's an odd one, because 95% of the cards I've heard him call, which are usually the Integrated Sports PPV's in the States, he has usually been the analyst/color commentator (usually with Colonel Bob Sheridan, before his illness), rather than the 'play-by-play' role he has been on Primetime, so I can't get used to him in the main role.

And as Colonel Bob always points out, Ricardo was a placekicker in the NFL in the late 70's-early 80's. Goodness knows how he ended up as a boxing commentator from there.

What's happened to Colonel Bob Sheridan? I remember hearing him commentating on fights for talkSPORT 10 or 11 years ago now. He was really good.

I always felt that, had talkSPORT persevered with boxing, he could have become as big a cult figure to listeners of that station as the great Bob Bubka has become when it comes to their golf coverage.

Colonel Bob commentated on the Brandon Rios fight the other week for Pro Box, which was shown over here on Premier Sports.

Colonel Bob hadn't done any commentating this year because he's been really ill with pneumonia and other stuff until the Rios v Antillon fight a couple of weeks back, and Michael Buffer gave him a mention in the introductions for Khan v Judah at the weekend.

He does the international feeds for the vast majority of major US promoters and has had quite a lot of outings on Premier because of it. He does chat a lot of rubbish-one card last year he was pretending to be at ringside for a fight in Mexico, and supposedly cracking jokes with Jimmy Lennon Jnr in between rounds whenthey cut back to him commentating from a studio in between fights. But it all adds to his charm, and I enjoy his enthusiasm for the most part.

European Darts Championship, ITV4

Tony Wrighton presenting with Alan Warriner and Chris Mason as pundits.

Thanks for the information on Colonel Bob Sheridan, Chris. Good to know he's still going strong despite his recent health problems.

Foxinthebox23 has beaten me to posting details of ITV4's coverage of the PDC European Championship, where there are a couple of new names.

Not only is Sky Sports News presenter Tony Wrighton their anchorman but OJ Borg is their interviewer. While I think it is the first time Tony has covered darts, I believe OJ was involved in Nuts TV's coverage of the PDC US Open and South African Masters back in 2008, although he is best known for his work on BBC One's National Lottery draws.

It seems quite a low-key affair with lots of absentees from ITV's Grand Slam of Darts coverage of old. Understandably there's no Ned Boulting after he spent three weeks covering the Tour de France, while Matt Smith is not there after he anchored ITV4's coverage of the Audi Cup earlier in the week. Jaine Omorogbe is not involved either.

Peter Drury and John Rawling have yet to be heard on commentary, despite both of their voices featuring in the trailer, meaning the two ex-pros in Chris Mason and Alan Warriner-Little have had to pair up on certain matches what with Stuart Pyke being the only regular 'lead' commentator to work day one.

I'm wondering if ITV Sport are trying out Tony Wrighton as a potential tertiary football presenter, what with Jim Rosenthal seemingly no longer in their plans (he wasn't mentioned in their Rugby World Cup press release today). I think he is one of the better Sky Sports News presenters and he has presented A-League football on their main channels in the past.

Question for Ariusuk - are ITV4 the host broadcaster? SPORT1 (Germany) and RTL 7 (the Netherlands) are also televising the tournament, which is being staged in Dusseldorf, but judging by the camera work I'd hazard a guess that it's an ITV team filming the shots. I notice the Matchroom Sport logo appeared on ITV4's endboard at the end of tonight's coverage too.

Here is briefly that RWC 2011 press release...

• ITV to exclusively broadcast all games throughout the tournament live on ITV1 and ITV4

• All games to be broadcast in high definition on ITV1 HD and ITV4 HD and simulcast live on ITV.com

• Steve Rider and Craig Doyle lead an ITV’s Rugby World Cup team and are joined by Lawrence Dallaglio, Michael Lynagh, Sean Fitzpatrick, Francois Pienaar, Phil Vickery, Gareth Thomas, Alan Quinlan, Scott Hastings, Martin Bayfield, Thom Evans and Andy Gomarsall. First 3 weeks of tournament from London then remainder in NZ

• Commentators including Nick Mullins, Simon Ward and Martin Gillingham. All commentary and reporters on-site.

• Highlights broadcast every evening on ITV1 and ITV4.

I wonder if they have another commentator TBC there or if Arius can shed some light. 3 seems a bit short. Or maybe will they take some commentary from HB - Sky Sport NZ.

EDIT: Seen at bottom that Bob Symonds is commentating too (on site i wonder). I wonder still though if the odd clashing (maybe meaningless match) will use HB commentary?

There's full details in the press ack including what channel game is on, and the vast majority of weekend games, plus any game involving the Home Nations, are on ITV1

ITV4 are only showing midweek games involving overseas teams and one or two weekend games (Tonga v Namibia type games at that)

Yes well done! That is him, I thought he was quite knowledgable and had a good chemistry with Barry McGuigan. I seem to remember he also did the 1989 Tyson v Bruno fight on Sky Channel.

3 would be short, but as you later discovered Bob Symonds will also be part of the team.

Incidentally, Sky Sports NZ is not the host - they are the home rightsholder, but the host feeds are being produced by someone else.

As for the darts, Matchroom is the host broadcaster and is also doing the ITV4 coverage. ITV Sport has no involvement in the productions.

Which would explain why Tony Wrighton is presenting, as he does all the voiceovers for the Matchroom highlights programmes now.

Are ITV Wales doing their own opt-outs for Wales' games in the Rugby World Cup?

That will come as news to the organisers, who are under the impression that Sky NZ is the host broadcaster, according to their website:
Quote:
“Rugby World Cup Limited (RWCL) has announced that SKY Television New Zealand will be the Host Broadcaster for all matches of Rugby World Cup 2011 in New Zealand.”

The broadcasts will be operated by On Site Broadcasting, Sky NZ's wholly owned subsidiary, which covers all Sky NZ's sport in NZ.

I think ITV will be alright with four commentators at the RWC

40 pool games, 4 comms, averages out at 10 pool games per commentator over four weeks

Compare that with last year's football World Cup, ITV had four commentators on 47* group games (around11/12 games per commentator, and in just two weeks).

So I think four is enough

*I know there were 48 games, but of course they used world feed commentary for highlights of Ivory Coast v North Korea

Thanks for those details, that makes sense.

I suspected the production would be coming from a UK team, as the camera shots and directors' work are very similar to that of previous years Grand Slam of Darts, as opposed to tournaments like the US Open which have been filmed by local crews and look noticeably different. This also explains why no "ITV guys" are involved per se.

Charlie Colvile has been a very busy boy recently.
I always prefer him presenting as there is likely to be a bit more 'edge' to proceedings and it's all a little less chummy.
