Yes he has beaten the tongue cancer he was suffering from. Good news

Delighted to hear Tony Green is recovering and is back to doing what he loves. Great news.

Darren, do have details of ESPN's broadcast team at the Winmau World Masters? Other than Tony, I know Ray Stubbs presented their coverage and Nat Coombs was their roving reporter (hence why he's not hosting 5 Live Sports Extra's baseball coverage tonight). I presume you would know who else has been involved? I've not had chance to catch any of their coverage sadly.

He started off with Sky but is still freelance so I guess in the absence of other potential pundits who were at Flushing Meadow, Sky decided to use him.

Little update - Martin Gillingham was joined by Australian 20km walk athlete Regan Lamble for the Men's 50km on Saturday Morning.

Yeah hosted by Ray Stubbs with commentary from Tony Green, David Croft and Tony O'Shea with Martin Adams and Darryl Fitton doing the odd stint too.

I Have to say that Rory Hamilton, STVs Rugby commentator is fantastic... if you've not heard him he commentates on either a Glasgow or Edinbrugh game on STVs Rabo Pro 12 thing League highlights

Thanks for that. Having clicked on the link to your Twitter, I see you were at the Hull Arena today. I hope you had a great day and enjoyed the darts.

I was very surprised to see this.

I don't think Castle has appeared on Sky for many, many years and it seems a bit strange to suddenly use someone of his status solely on a low key highlights programme.

Could Sky be planning a big move, ie:

- Castle to become main tennis presenter

- Buckland to become main F1 presenter

I think that would be the absolutely perfect scenario for Sky but I doubt it'll happen.

Miles Harrison is to commentate on the Rugby World Cup for Sky Sport New Zealand:-

Miles Harrison, who with Stuart Barnes was 'loaned' to ITV by Sky for the 2007 tournament, is commentating for Sky New Zealand this time. Back home, BBC had the UK TV rights for the first World Cup in 1987, but ITV outbid them in 1991 and have held the rights ever since, despite showing little other live rugby. John Taylor, ITV's mainstay as the final commentator, has switched to radio now, working in tandem with Brian Moore for Talksport, who have nabbed the full live rights from BBC Five Live.

Nick Mullins, the lead commentator on ESPN last season, will be ITV's main man for the final in Auckland. The BBC's only live commentary will be supplied in Welsh by Gareth Charles on Radio Cymru.”

I was just about to post this in the other thread. I think it was mentioned before that Sky NZ are providing the world feed commentaries this time round so he'll be an excellent addition to their line up.

EDIT: According to this article

http://www.stuff.co.nz/sport/rugby/r...s-Cup-coverage

Stuart Barnes and Gordon Bray will also be part of Sky NZ's coverage. No disrespect to ITV, but they've built a great line up.......except for the one game when Owen Nkumane is there!

If Joe Buck sounds funny it's because he suffered and is recovering from a vocal cord ailment.

Marcus Buckland - another of the bland presenters that Sky just love for some inexplicable reason. The signing of Mr Bland 2005-2011 aka Ben Shepherd being a prime example.

I don't understand why they didn't just follow ITV's example and poach the best of the Beeb over the years.

Whaaat!? Buckland's excellent, both when he did football and now on the tennis. Ben Shephard isn't fit to lace his presenting shoes.

And he was in fact taken from the BBC

Completely agree, he was excellent on the rare days he presented cricket too.

If the past two weeks have taught us anything it's that tv needs to make more of underrated professional presenters like Marcus Buckland and less of characters like Ortis Deley!

Ah, that would explain why he's sounded a bit odd on the baseball games I've heard him do this year.

Quite frankly, I wish he'd decided to stop all commentary until it was fully healed - I'm not his biggest fan!

Castle has been on as a pundit, so I can't see them grooming him to be the lead presenter. I think its more of a case of a lack of available pundits, who did they use last year on the highlights show?

I hope Buckland stays on the tennis, after a shakey start a few years ago he has improved his tennis knowledge ten-fold. He really does hold the show together so well when they're on-site in New York and helps the coverage look very very polished.

OK. When did Boris Becker join Sky????

Put him on commentry instead of being a pundit in the studio.

Exactly. The point is that Buckland knows about 1000 times more about what he is talking about than Shephard.

He is the best all round sports presenter on British TV. His style has some similarities with Des Lynam.

He should be in a very high profile position and F1 will be much higher profile than tennis (where Sky suffer from only having one grand slam).

Going off-topic. But is there a chance that Sky could nab the rights to the French open?

Becker has joined for the remainder of the week. I wonder how this came about, I thought he worked for another broadcaster for the us open. Good to see it though, adds abit more "Gravitas" to the coverage.

I think if Sky wanted the rights the French Open they would have taken them already. I would however like to see it happen.

I can't see any news articles to confirm this but...

Did one of those ESPN Fan forum surveys and on a list of sports they asked us whether it's a factor in us subscribing to ESPN, it listed "Roland Garros Tennis"

Does look as though ESPN have picked up the French Open, whether that's in partnership with another channel (like the BBC) I don't know

Eurosport lost the rights apparently. And I'm sure Sky would have picked it up before, if given the chance. Why show all the clay masters building up to it, and then not the main event itself.

Quote:
“Roland-Garros tennis open’s European TV rights for the 2012-2016 period have been attributed to agency MP & Silva, French Tennis Federation, FFT, has announced.

The European TV rights to the tennis tournament, whose price amounts to €15 million a year, have hitherto been owned by pan-European channel Eurosport.

Created in 2004, MP & Silva specialises with the management and distribution of sport TV rights. It also owns the rights to Italian football championship, and to English Premier League football in a number of territories.
The FFT decision is a blow to the EBU, the consortium of European broadcasters led by Eurosport, whose major argument is to reach more than 120 million households.
TV rights remain the main source of cash for tennis open Roland-Garros, representing 33.5% of the whole revenues and €47.5 million.
90 channels are currently broadcasting 6500 hours of matches into 214 countries to some 3 billion viewers.

================================================== ==================
MP & Silva has snapped up the European broadcast distribution rights to the French Open International Tennis Championships at Roland Garros in a five-year agreement.

The international sports media agency has replaced the European Broadcasting Union in a deal that will run from the 2012 edition through to 2016. This year’s French Open is set to conclude this weekend. The contract was signed with Fédération Française de Tennis (FFT) and marks a “new distribution strategy”, according to MP & Silva.

The new approach will see the agency undertake an individual territory-by-territory distribution strategy in key territories across Europe. A successful market-by-market approach such as this has been demonstrated by other top-tier rights properties such as Wimbledon and UEFA Euro 2008.

“Roland Garros is one of the most important international sporting events in the world and we are extremely honoured to be given this opportunity to work closely with the FFT,” said MP & Silva CEO Andrea Radrizzani. “We believe that this is a historical moment for Roland Garros.”

Radrizzani added: “Now is the perfect time to engage more fully with the key markets of Europe and to examine new opportunities. At the same time, our strategy envisages working with some of the federation’s long-term incumbent partners, so we are offering continuity, as well as change. We believe that together, we will significantly enhance the positioning and value of Roland Garros.””

Ahh that wouldn't be good. Im not a fan of their broadcasting standards at all. I also cant see people subscribing for one tournament and little else. Although they did show a an ATP 250 tournament earlier in the year from LA i think.

Some commentaries from today.

Murray v Young Mark Petchy and Leif Shiras
