I really hope ESPN don't get the rights. I definitely wouldn't subscribe just for one slam. I quite enjoy Eurosport's French Open coverage and I'd hate to have to settle for the second-choice matches. I can't see ESPN putting together decent coverage. How would they get better commentators than David Mercer, Chris Bradnam and Simon Reed?

Some commentaries from today.

Murray v Young Mark Petchy and Leif Shiras
Nadal v Muller Barry Milns and Barry Cowan (Although this was not the pairing on the interactive stream)”

If they did I imagine most of it would be taken from their US coverage with Chris Fowler, Cliff Drysdale etc. I'm guessing the only reason they showed the 250 event was because it was produced by ESPN in the US

What makes you think they couldn't hire those three? They are, as far as I can tell, all freelancers.

Per TV Sports Markets:

"MP & Silva pays 50-per-cent increase for French Open rights and gives free-to-air coverage guarantees"

We don't know quite what and how extensive these guarantees are.

But it appears that at a minimum neither Sky nor ESPN could acquire exclusive live rights.

Whether that is enough to put Sky (or ESPN) off, we'll have to wait and see.

How long has Leif Shiras been working for Sky Sports? They are currently showing a replay i think of the 2002 agassi v sampras final with Leif and Mark Petchy on commentary. I didn't realise Leif had been such a fixture of the team.

Leif Shiras was doing world feed commentary on a lot of ATP events at that time (if it wasn't him, it was David Mercer, and on some Masters Series events, you'd get both of them - in places like Cincinatti and Toronto for example), so he would have been heard quite a lot on Sky that year as they often took the world feed commentary on the Masters Series then.

So it is quite possible that Sky would have signed him up to do the US Open for them, rather than flying someone like Bill Threlfall out there.

I don't know about as far back as 2002, but Threlfall was certainly working on the US Open in 2006, the year before his death, albeit in a reduced role.

Incidentally, why on earth has Bill's Wikipedia page been deleted?

Murray had also played in the same tournament in 2010 as I remember watching the final on Eurosport. So I guessed they were hoping he'd do the same again this year. Unfortunately for them..he didn't.

Well they have the rights in the US I think, so I suspect it'll be the same production and we'd just get the same coverage as the US. Hence very little cost involved and quite a few hours of airtime covered.

Williams vs Pavlyuchenkova-Peter Fleming and Sam Smith

Chris Bradnam and Jo Durie for Eurosport and I have to say I'm really enjoying their commentary on this match.Much more entertaining than Sky on this one. I always love listening to Bradnam and Durie together and I think they are very underated. They are exciting and have passion and have a great rapore together- i love their chatty style.I have taken a real dislike towards Peter Fleming - I've found him very annoying and boring.

What a suprise - ITV concentrating solely on England. It's not as if the other Home Nations had games this weekend as well

It was just a short filler segment during the half hour gap between the end of the opening ceremony and kick-off in the opening match.

I don't think they'd have had time to fit comparable segments in for the rest of the home nations, although it would have been nice if they could have done something on Scotland too seeing as they along with England are the first two home nations to start their campaign.

That's interesting, Paul's involved in talkSPORT Rugby World Cup coverage (he did an Ireland preview during their post-match section of this morning's coverage of the first game) and I was under the impression he'd be in New Zealand for them. Evidently not (or at least not yet).

I'm surprised Kingsley Jones isn't at the World Cup yet, although Russia's first game isn't until midweek
