For all his weaknesses, I'd much rather hear Vickery's genuine enthusiasm for his country than Greenwood seeming to revel in seeing another home nation going out. Thank heavens Greenwood isn't involved in ITV's coverage this time around, he really was a particularly annoying piece of work as a co-commentator.”

I always got the impression that Greenwood thinks he is an awful lot funnier than he actually is. I have a DVD of the successful 2003 World Cup campaign where Greenwood is one of the main talking heads for the England team, and every time he is on screen he is trying to make a joke or a funny remark. I've always found him extremely annoying.

I would agree with The Difference that Phil Vickery with Scott Hastings worked well today

Sunday 2nd October - Rugby World Cup 2011 Pool D, ITV1

Wales v Fiji

Steve Rider presented from London alongside Michael Lynagh, Gareth Thomas and Girvan Dempsey

Commentators: Simon Ward and Michael Owen

Ireland v Italy (Pool C)

Lawrence Dallaglio replaced Gareth Thomas, otherwise the same studio team as earlier

Commentators: Nick Mullins and Alan Quinlan

Reporter: Gabriel Clarke

During the final half hour of this morning's programme, we saw Simon Ward conducting post-match interviews from Wales v Fiji and Martin Bayfield speaking with Scotland coach Andy Robinson. Anyone know who did the commentary on the two earlier games? Presuming Bob Symonds and Andy Moore did commentary on the ITV1 Wales opt-out coverage of Wales v Fiji, they would have had to take the world feed for one of them.

There was a nice closing montage at the end of the programme charting all of the pool phase, complete with full credits. With the presentation team leaving their London studio base to front coverage in New Zealand, I guess it's the end of the tournament for many members of ITV's crew.

No, Symonds did the Argentina match on his own, with Gillingham and Gomersall on the other.

So then, predcitions for the quarters ?

I am going to plump for

Eng V France - Mullins
Wales V Ireland - Ward ( Symonds for ITV Wales )
NZ V Arg - Gillingham
SA V Aus - Mullins

Unless ITV send Gillingham or Ward home and just use one commentator for the two Wellington matches?

It's very sad indeed. His father, the legendary Ernie Johnson Sr. passed away earlier this year. Very difficult year for him.

Thanks for the information Steve.

I think all four of ITV's main commentators will get at least one quarter-final each. I see Nick Mullins commentating on both Eden Park quarter-finals, doing England v France with Phil Vickery and New Zealand v Argentina with Scott Hastings.

I'd guess that it will be Simon Ward, Alan Quinlan and Michael Owen for Ireland v Wales, with Bob Symonds and Andy Moore doing this one for ITV1 Wales; then I think it'll be Martin Gillingham and Andy Gomarsall (a frequent pairing on big matches not involving the home nations) doing South Africa v Australia.

But after next weekend's matches it will most probably be the end of the tournament for Ward, Gillingham and; should Wales be knocked out; Symonds. I fully expect Mullins to call both semi-finals, the third place game and the final.

I'm not that familiar with his work but the general impression I get from the baseball press is that Ernie Johnson Jr is one of the most highly-regarded broadcasters of his generation when it comes to his chosen sport. Hopefully his son's condition will improve enough to allow him to return to the TBS booth in 2012 without neglecting his family. I certainly wish him and his family all the best.

I don't know about baseball being his 'chosen sport' because I've always associated him with TNT's NBA coverage. Though that's probably because I don't watch much baseball

Anyway...

I would of thought they'd have 2 diff commentators for both semi's.

Can't see Mullins doing 3rd place AND final.

Another great co-commentary by Michael Owen this morning. Alan Quinlan too put in a good shift this morning, I think he's improved as the tournament progressed. I think the three man set-up has worked really well.

Anyone know who their studio team was and if they used any additional interviewers other than Gabriel Clarke?

Studio team was Frances Donovan (sp?), Mike Hall, Gareth Llewellyn and Mark Jones.

Although Mark Jones were not there at the start of the game, there was a joke about an alarm clock, I am not sure if this is accurate or not.

Yeah I thought I heard him once or twice but it hasn't seemed like he's part of the main Sky team for this event.

Interesting that Rod Studd did the whole final with John Gwynne and Wayne Mardle half each. Nothing for Stuart Pyke.
