Gloucester V Cardiff Blues EDF Energy Cup Final

Andrew Cotter & Brian Moore
Lyn Davies did 'blink and you'll miss it' highlights for S4C

Scarlets v. Ospreys on Setanta Ireland

John Forrest & Reggie Corrigan commentating
Huw Llewellyn Davis and Gwyn Jones on S4C with Wyn Gruffydd and Tony Copsey on the English Language alternative. Lyn Jones (ex-Ospreys coach a few years back) was special guest when Gareth Roberts was in the studio at half time. Man mountain Derwyn Jones in their truck for game analysis. S4C usually start their coverage with the host and analysts just behind one of the posts.

Will it be Setanta Ireland only for the Irish teams (rugby union) tour to USA and Canada?

Good to know. I don't think any announcement has been made as to which channel has the Wales right (We also go to USA and Canada) but I'd expect it to be S4C.

Setanta USA have also started showing domestic competitions as well.

Must say I thought Simon Holt's call of the bet365 (nee Whitbread) Gold Cup at Sandown for Channel 4 was one of the all-time great voice-almost-breaking calls - not to mention it being a finish to match that of 25 years ago (hopefully some here will know of which I speak).

I agree about Simon Holt yesterday. I commented to my girlfriend afterwards on some of the wording he used. He is a superb commentator.

Last night on Setanta on the boxing from Belfast, it was John Rawling and Richie Woodhall. That means that if those 2 do the Froch V Taylor fight for ITV tonight it must be off tube.

I think he might be the best there's ever been - certainly on ITV/C4.

Racing commentary is one thing that's got steadily better as time's gone on. Of course those who do it have far better backup than they used to have, but when I listen to old commentaries, Peter O'Sullevan obviously excepted, they sound incredibly incompetent by modern standards - "very slow and a bit military" as Holt himself put it.

I've just caught a bit of the NHL Conference Q.Final game between New York Rangers and Washington Capitals on ESPN America, and notice an NBC Logo. Does this mean that NBC have the rights from the Q Finals or just that ESPN America are taking whatever feed they can?

I agree with you both, with the greatest of respect to Jim McGrath, Simon Holt is the best around and one of the best commentators in sport as a whole atm.

He always seems to judge his commentary speed perfectly with the fluctuating pace of the race, just like Peter O'Sullivan used to.

ESPN America are taking whatever feed they can.

They picked up NESN's coverage of the Yankees the other night, when on walked NBC's head Dick Ebersol.

They had a really interesting chat with him over an innings, extracting from him the nugget that Evander Holyfield was due to light the torch at the Atlanta Olympics... but he had the final say and went for Ali...

I also think he has a very good eye. How often when watching a race will he call the likely winner with 7 furlongs to go ? Just look at Saturday. He said "Hennessy is way back in third but McCoy will not give in, that you can be sure of". And he didn't.

My favourite Languid commentary was when Master Minded beat Voy Por Ustedes at Cheltenham last year.

" He's making Voy Por Ustedes look ordinary. And he's not ordinary". Just thought that was such a great line to sum up how good Master Minded was that day.

If anyone was watching this, Stuart said that if the Ospreys won this game (and also go on to win the League) he would streak down Jackland High Street.

Suprised Setanta didn't take this (for some reason they showed a repeat of the NG Dragons V Connacht)

The usual pairing of Lyn Davies and Deiniol Jones oedd yn sylwebbu yn gymraeg (was commentating in Welsh)
