So Sky have increased their test commentary team to 8. Crikey

As mentioned already, Jill is a freelancer hence she is working for ITV as well as the BBC. But Hugh Porter is usually a BBC man isnt he ? I thought ITV used Phil Liggot

No place for Bob Willis or Paul Allott. I actually quite like Allott, but Willis can be annoying at times.

It has been a few years since either of those two did a home test match I think.

ITV uses Hugh for domestic cycling (Tour Series, Tour of Britain, Tour of Ireland) and Phil for international cycling.

Cricket on Five

Presenter: Mark Nicholas (also commentating)
Commentators: Geoffrey Boycott, Michael Vaughan, Simon Hughes (The Analyst)

Did anybody else have any sound problems during Nicholas' voice over segments or The Analyst slot?

It's also a little worrying that Five haven't been able to find a sponsor!

Neither have Sky, although it's not much of an issue for them

I didn't watch them tonight, but Willis normally joins Charles Colville for the evening highlights.

DS is saying that ESPN have signed Nick Mullins as chief rugby commentator for their coverage which starts next season. A good solid signing in my opinion.

Great signing in my view - I really rate him as a rugby commentator, I think he's the best the BBC have on their networked TV and radio coverage.

Also, good on DS for getting this story ahead of the usual sources for sports broadcasting appointments (Charles Sale, Media Guardian etc).

Leinster V Ospreys (Magners League RU Final)

Gareth Roberts going with 'the fonz' look was hosting from the RDS, with Gareth Davies and Nicky Robinson guests. Gwyn Jones was in the role of TV truck analyst, with commentary from Huw Llewellyn Davies and Derwyn Jones.

I didn't catch much of the 2nd half, as for every few minutes, the SCART lead from the Freeview box to the TV would turn the screen blue and also switch the box off.

IMO 8 is too many if they're only having 2 on the air at any one time. Channel 9 in Australia have started having 3 commentators on air during the same stint during the last couple of years, so I wonder if Sky might go down that route eventually.

Nick Knight is completely pointless and extremely irritating and is not needed at all.

With the "Third Man" it brings it down the 7 commentators at one time, and i think this is borderline ok. The trend of throwing ex players in the comm box for the sake of it has to stop though, and i'm quite surprised/ relived they didn't add Michael Vaughan when he became available.

No, they'll just pick him up in a year or two after Five and the BBC have trained him up.

As I always say I would rather listen to him than Nasser Hussain, he talks more sense aswell.

On the numbers point I do think Sky will go down that route eventually, especially with lots of grounds being redeveloped and having newer media facilities. Channel 9 do have it easier of course as the cricket grounds are mostly AFL grounds aswell and they generally have 4 commentators working a game these days.

Knighty is a smug git, so fits in perfectly at sky. But I think he is a pretty good analyst and commentator, and is probably next in the 'presenter' role a'la Wardy.

The whole adding -y to make somebodies nickname in english cricket needs to stop, but is blooming catchy.

These days any new sky commentator, or latest selection for the england team always seems to have a -y on the end of their name.

”

That seems to have been the cricketer's way for a long time, you can even go back to the 80s and 90s with Stew-y, Gough-y and Lamb-y

An interesting point, which has not gone unnoticed elsewhere.
