Yes, I think the Channel 9 commentary is OK, and I don't mind them for most aussie games, but their cheerleading during the Ashes would get very annoying. However, I'd take them over the ESPN Star Sports rabble anyday. I think a lot of people on here see names they recognise from UK terrestrial on Channel 9, like Nicholas, Benaud and Slater and get very excited. I think Lawry, Slater and Nicholas are alright and Richie is excellent, but I'd much rather hear the sky comms during the Ashes.

Yes because the Sky boys are so impartial aren't they ? It's the Ashes and they are Aussies, bound to show national pride. For Michael Slater read Ian Botham....i wouldn't want it any other way

Interesting to see Andrew Cotter facing away from the river in that studio!”

Apologies for being seven and a half months late, but I know he has many, many fans on this forum who might like to know that I've discovered today that the commentator on the International feed was the one and only Barry Davies!

Gillingham is solid enough, does the job he is freelance, but if he does Heineken cup games for Sky he is number 4/5 commentator for me on the rugby...

Sky's ranking: 1. Harrison, 2. Chignell, 3. Mark Robson, 4. Johnnie Hammond/Mark Gillingham

At times I do find Will Chignell - a bit like the Peter Drury of Rugby... bit OTT on words!

______________

Ashes currently has the usual Sky team live on SS HD1. Does anyone know if anyone else around the world will be taking Sky's coverage instead of the 9 Network's commentary?

Gareth A. Davies, the Daily Telegraph's boxing correspondent, was a guest on the Hawksbee & Jacobs show on talkSPORT radio this afternoon, speaking about Carl Froch's world title fight at the weekend.

He mentioned that he's just spoken to Sky Sports commentator Adam Smith, who has recently been appointed Sky's Head of Boxing (replacing Ian Darke?), who told him he is planning "to do his upmost to get Carl on Sky".

To hear the interview in full, go here - http://www.talksport.co.uk/radio/lis.../episode/13373 - and click the tab marked "1500-1530" to the right of the player. Gareth's bit starts at 22 minutes 20 seconds. He's on for around five minutes.

Darke wasn't Sky's head of boxing, he was their lead commentator. The head of boxing was suspended after an 'incident' at the PPV they had in Birmingham in September. Smith has took over, and hopefully it will see more US fights, and Froch on Sky. But I'll believe it when I see it. Incidentally, Gareth Davies was mentioned on Showtime's coverage of the Froch fight at the weekend, he was one of their 'press row scoring judges' they used.

As for this weekends boxing...

Sorry to be a bit late with this, but does anyone know why Richie is doing the main presenting gig for Channel 9 after a few years of Mark Nicholas doing it? Has he proven unpopular?

Oh right, I did think it was a bit odd. I know that the Channel 9 press release said that Richie was presenting, but I wonder whether that was just a publicity thing. Was The Difference referring to that?

Apologies - your assumption is correct. I have not watched any of Channel 9's coverage other than what has been shown on the ITV4 highlights programmes, so I was just going by their press release to fill in the gaps. Thanks for the correction, The Wanderer.

No problem. I'm very grateful for all the information you post, so wasn't trying to criticise.

I wonder why Channel 9 would put out deliberately incorrect information in a press release, it's most bizzare?!
The Wanderer

If it was the one press release it could have been a genuine mistake.

Just to reconfirm, I watched Channel 9's coverage yesterday until I finally declared (see what I did there? ) and went to bed at 5.15am. Mark Nicholas presented the start of the day and the Tea Break show, where they showed some unseen archive footage from the 20s. Simon O'Donnell did the Cricket Show during the lunch break
