The team for the first two tests was as follows: Nicholas (presenter and commentary), Greig, Taylor, Healy, Slater, Warne, Benaud, Lawry, Chappell. A two-tier system seemed to operating, with Benaud, Lawry and Chappell usually getting one spell in each session of play, while the others usually had two. If Gilchrist and Lee were heard in Brisbane and Adelaide, it would have been in a one-off slot. Lee is here in NZ at the moment, playing T20 for Wellington.
At Perth, Benaud and Lawry are "rested" with Gilchrist a full member of the team and Chappell getting an equal share of turns on the air. Interestingly, Lawry is frequently mentioned, with a Bill-impersonation contest between Taylor and Slater at one point on Saturday, but Benaud has not been mentioned. Vaughan has done a single 30-minute guest spell. He said that he'd been waiting since Brisbane but was only allowed on-air when England started to do badly.
I don't agree with an earlier comment of shelsey93 that Chappell is a cheerleader for the Aussies. Over the years he has been much more prepared to criticise the Aussies than most of his colleagues.
I don't like the three-man system that Channel 9 has been using for five years now. Two plus an analyst/third man is better. Sky New Zealand uses three commentators for domestic T20, but the team operates for the whole game, so they all get heard.”

Thanks for those details about the Channel 9 coverage Kentkiwi. I think I might declare from posting the information about ITV4's coverage as the commentary line-ups on each Test have proven hard to follow when relying solely on four or five hour long highlights programmes.

I don't know if any of you caught ITV4's highlights show last night (what can I say, I'm a glutton for punishment), but it was interesting as what with England being bowled out within an hour, they basically showed the entire day's play - by showing full overs including dot balls etc. That took up the first three chunks of the programme, with the fourth being taken up by the post-match interviews and Mark Nicholas' sign off.

For the record, the commentators for the first half hour of Nine's coverage on Sunday were Ian Healy, Tony Greig and Mark Taylor, with Ian Chappell, Michael Slater and Shane Warne taking over for the second half hour until the end.

Rugby Highlights: Heineken Cup, ITV4

Martin Bayfield presented from the Cardiff City Stadium

Leicester Tigers v Perpignan - Charlie Brougham
Benetton Treviso v Scarlets - Tom Skippings (reporting)
Cardiff Blues v Northampton Saints - Simon Ward
Leinster v Clermont Auvergne - Charlie Brougham
Racing Metro v Saracens - Tom Skippings (reporting)
Ospreys v Munster - Simon Ward
London Wasps v Newport-Gwent Dragons - Tom Skippings (reporting)
Bath v Ulster - Tom Skippings (reporting)

This programme seems to get better each round and today's highlights was the most complete ITV4 Heineken Cup show by far. Of the British and Irish teams involved in the competition, only London Irish (who were at Toulon - was that game even televised?), Edinburgh (who played today so would have missed the edit) and Glasgow (who don't play until tomorrow) didn't feature. Eight games were featured making for a comprehensive show, so well done to ITV Sport.

Toulon v London Irish was shown live on France 2 (in, er, France) on Saturday afternoon so there was no excuse not to show highlights, methinks.

Ah well, ITV4 loses that fifth star from me for not quite being perfect.

Nevertheless, they packed a lot into that hour of television, far more than they have done in previous weeks. After a slow start ITV4's Heineken Cup highlights show is developing into an excellent programme. I've really enjoyed both their rugby and cricket highlights in recent weeks.

Australia v England - 3rd Test (Thursday 16th December - Sunday 19th December)

Presenter: David Gower (also commentating)
Commentators: Michael Atherton, Nasser Hussain, Sir Ian Botham, David Lloyd, Shane Warne and Michael Holding

Highlights were presented by Charles Colvile with Bob Willis on all four days, Angus Fraser on Day 1, Nick Knight on Day 2, Robert Key on Day 3 and Robert Croft on Day 4. Fraser, Key and Croft all did a 'double-shift' when they appeared on the highlights, each having covered SA v India earlier in the day. A special show - 'Ashes 2010/11 - The Series So Far' -was presented by Colvile with Willis and Fraser tonight in the slot that the Day 5 highlights were scheduled for.

South Africa v India - 1st Test (Thursday 16th December - Monday 20th December)

Presenter: Ian Ward
Pundits: Angus Fraser (Days 1-5), Robert Key (Days 1+3,), Mark Ramprakash (Day 2) and Robert Croft (Days 4+5)

Commentary from Supersport team of Robin Jackman, Kepler Wessels, Mike Haysman, Shaun Pollock, HD Ackerman, Pommie Mbangwa and Ravi Shastri

The programme is made by The Perform Group, so they should get the credit. And criticism.

And there was no excuse for not showing the Edinburgh game - it was over before the programme started.

I think Simon Golding may have covered some of the Ski Cross on BE2, but I'm not definite on that.

PDC World Darts Championship 2011, Sky Sports

Dave Clark presenting from the Alexandra Palace alongside Rod Harrington and Eric Bristow

Commentators: Sid Waddell, John Gwynne, Nigel Pearson, Stuart Pyke, Rod Studd and Rod Harrington

Including on Tuesday...

Terry Jenkins v Joe Cullen - Sid Waddell, John Gwynne and special guest Andrew Flintoff

A notable absentee from the commentary box during the first round was Dave Lanning, who retired earlier in the year. He had been a stalwart of Sky Sports darts coverage, having commentated for them at every previous PDC World Championship since its inception 17 years ago. Happy retirement Dave.

Thankfully these days the pictures and graphics are from Supersport as well, because for a long time we would get Supersport commentary, but graphics and pictures from SABC. It looked silly when the comms were talking about something different to what was on screen, and barbaric when we had shots of the whoever the comms in the SABC box were, while Jackman or whoever from Supersport was talking. Very odd.

The Winter Dew Tour thing that was on Sunday (19th)? Yeah - it was him.

4th Test Channel Nine (ITV highlights) commentators
It's back to the line-up used for the first two tests: Nicholas, Benaud, Lawry, Warne, Taylor, Healy, Slater, Greig, Chappell. Again, Benaud, Chappell and Lawry not getting as much airtime as the others. They gradually retreated from their usual every-day-is-Australia-Day style as the enormity of the home team's humiliation became apparent.

Can I ask what is the deal with Warne, obviously Sky and 9 are sharing him, how? Is he just bouncing between boxes all day or with Sky one day 9 the next??

Bouncing between boxes

For example, on Day 1 of this test he was commentating on Nine for the first half hour of play and then in Sky's box in the very same session

Thanks! I thought it may of been day-to-day, In the bits I seen of day 2 yesterday I never heard Warne once!!

Oops!! Looks like Warne is wearing a polo with a Channel 9 logo, in the sky commentary box!!!

Working in two teams is fairly common these days. In this series, Jonathan Agnew and Jim Maxwell are doing ball-by-ball in both the ABC and BBC boxes. Ian Chappell and Michael Slater have been on Channel 9 and Test Match Special. In the UK, Michael Vaughan and Geoff Boycott divide their time between TMS and Five (I assume that the Five highlights commentary is done "live"). It's a question of which has first call. In the case of Warne, there's probably an agreement between the producers. He's usually on the C9 build-up, which starts 30 minutes before play. Does he appear on Sky before this (as Sky starts an hour before first ball)?

Now we are into the second round, with one notable commentary team from tonight (Tuesday):

Simon Whitlock v Denis Ovens - Stuart Pyke, Rod Harrington and special guest Andrew Flintoff

Sid Waddell took yesterday off and Nigel Pearson has been away today (he was covering football for talkSPORT this afternoon). Eric Bristow has done the odd co-commentary, including one on the Terry Jenkins v Steve Brown match this afternoon.

Is it just me that isn't keen on David Gower?? For me he slavours over his words and stutters too much when presenting.

He's OK, and that's about it as far as I'm concerned

I've got a Nine stream up so I could watch the presentations - handed back to Mark Nicholas too early and had to go back to Mark Taylor interview Jonathan Trott. These Aussies, lose an Ashes series* and everything falls apart

*Well fail to regain them anyway

Gower timed himself nicely, to be in the box for the 3rd half-hour to call the decisive/final wicket! (Although I know it's planned out, still lucky for Gower!)
