I thought his commentary on the final wicket was very good actually. As a presenter he appears thoughtful and considered, and isn't prone to hyperbole. I don't think that should be undervalued.

Sky's special guest today (Wednesday 29th December) was five-time former World Championship semi-finalist Wayne Mardle, who failed to qualify this year.

"Hawaii 501" was their studio pundit during the evening session and he also did co-commentary on the Gary Anderson v Dennis Priestley (with Sid Waddell and John Gwynne) and Mark Webster v Mark Hylton (with Rod Studd) matches.

Seems like Wayne made a good impression as Sid has just tweeted to say that he'll be back tomorrow.

I'll second this. Top bloke.

Caught up on ITV4's Ashes Highlights show from last night earlier.

For those of you interested, Channel Nine's (and thus ITV4's) commentary teams for the fourth and final day of the Fourth Ashes Test were as follows: Michael Slater, Mark Taylor and Ian Healy did the first half hour; Bill Lawry, Tony Greig and Shane Warne did the second half hour; Mark Taylor, Mark Nicholas and Ian Chappell were on duty for the third half hour.

The trio of Michael Slater, Tony Greig and Bill Lawry must have come on just before 1am our time as they were the voices present when the final Aussie wicket fell as England retained the Ashes.

Covering the wicket of Ben Hilfenhaus on the radio were Jonathan Agnew and Geoffrey Boycott on Test Match Special; Glenn Mitchell and Peter Roebuck for ABC Radio's Grandstand and it was Mark Pougatch, Simon Hughes and Michael Vaughan on BBC Radio 5 Live.

Anyone know who was behind the mics for Sky Sports as England retained the Ashes?

Full commentary team was David Gower (presenting too), Michael Holding, David Lloyd, Shane Warne, Michael Atherton, Nasser Hussain and Sir Ian Botham

Gower was behind the mic for that final wicket, 99% sure Holding was with him but can't remember now!

Gower is decent enough in the box (can't fault any of the team...) He just seems very poor at times in front of camera, trying to describe the scenery etc, stutters a hell of a lot.

Yeah was Gower and Holding in the Box for the half hour England Won...

Channel 9 lot on the winning wicket where shocking, which was disappointing.

Thanks for the Sky Sports details guys.

I disagree, I thought Tony Greig was very good on the final wicket. I thought he summed up the moment really well. Michael Slater and Bill Lawry sounded pretty deflated as you might imagine but they were generous with their words towards England in the aftermath while allowing Greigy to take the lead.

I used to be quite lukewarm to Greigy during his spell on Channel 4 and talkSPORT back in the mid-2000s, but I've really enjoyed his work for Channel Nine during this series from what I've heard of him on the ITV4 programmes, he has been excellent.

KFC Twenty20 Big Bash (Thursday 30th December)
Western Australia vs Tasmania - Fox Sports 1

commentating: Brendon Julian (also presenting), Warren Smith, Mark Waugh and Greg Blewett, with Jecsaica Yates interviewing.

In my view Warren Smith screeching voice was dreadful hopefully he will not be doing too many cricket games in the future he should just stick to rugby league. Although since he has not done any RYOBI Cup matches this session maybe this is a once off or their only using him on T20

Australia v England - 4th Test (Sunday 26th December - Wednesday 29th December)

Presenter: David Gower (also commentating)
Commentators: Michael Atherton, Nasser Hussain, Sir Ian Botham, David Lloyd, Shane Warne and Michael Holding

Highlights were presented by Charles Colvile with Steve Harmison and Bob Willis. Charles was also joined by Steve and Bob for a special programme - 'The Ashes Retained' - shown in the slot the Day 5 highlights were scheduled for tonight.

New Zealand v Pakistan - 1st Twenty20 International (Sunday 26th December)

Presenter: Matt Floyd
Pundits: Azhar Mahmood and Jeremy Coney

Commentary from Sky Sport (NZ) team of Simon Doull, Ian Smith, Mark Richardson, Craig McMillan and Ramiz Raja

Ramiz Raja was late after his flight was delayed and so commentated only in the second innings of the match. Making his debut in the studio, Azhar Mahmood seemed nervous during the first game, which combined with English being his second language meant he found it difficult to make his points but has improved drastically over the 2nd and 3rd games and it is nice to see a former player from one of the Asian nations in the studio, something sky have lacked in recent years.

South Africa v India - 2nd Test (Sunday 26th December - Wednesday 29th December)

Presenter: Ian Ward
Pundits: Robert Key (Days 1+2), Angus Fraser (Days 1-4), Mark Ramprakash (Day 3) and Robert Croft (Day 4)

Commentary from Supersport team of Robin Jackman, Kepler Wessels, Shaun Pollock, HD Ackerman, Allan Donald, Ravi Shastri, Pommie Mbangwa and Mike Haysman

New Zealand v Pakistan - 2nd Twenty20 International (Tuesday 28th December)

As per 1st Twenty20 International

New Zealand v Pakistan - 3rd Twenty20 International (Wednesday 29th December)

Studio team as per 1st and 2nd Twenty20 Internationals

Commentary from Sky Sport (NZ) team of Simon Doull, Mark Richardson, Craig McMillan and Ramiz Raja

Hmm Agree to Disagree! Had the Channel 9 lot on the last day and they all sounded deflated and not very neutral.

Interested to read that djpower. As much as I like Warren Smith as an NRL commentator, I can imagine that he would be slightly over the top on something like cricket, it's probably similar to if Channel Nine got Ray Warren to work on some of their cricket coverage!

PDC World Darts Championship Quarter Finals 2011, Sky Sports

Dave Clark presenting from the Alexandra Palace alongside Wayne Mardle and Eric Bristow

Afternoon Session

Wes Newton v Terry Jenkins - John Gwynne and Wayne Mardle

Adrian Lewis v Vincent Van Der Voort - Rod Studd and Sid Waddell

Evening Session

Gary Anderson v Raymond Van Barneveld - Nigel Pearson and Stuart Pyke

Phil Taylor v Mark Webster - Sid Waddell and John Gwynne

Rod Harrington is suffering from laryngitis, which is why he's been absent since the Christmas break. Wayne Mardle seems to have replaced him after impressing during what was initially planned to be a guest punditry shift on Wednesday.

Compare it to the commentary on Sky Sports when the final wicket was taken:

'Australia are beaten, well beaten, beaten into the earth!'

And that was from David Gower!

PDC World Darts Championship Final 2011, Sky Sports & Sky 3D

Dave Clark presenting from the Alexandra Palace alongside Rod Harrington, Eric Bristow and Wayne Mardle

Under 21 final - Aaron Monk V Michael van Gerwen - Nigel Pearson and Rod Harrington not in 3D

Gary Anderson v Adrian Lewis - Sid Waddell and Rod Studd in 2D for the first 6 sets and then John Gwynne replaced Rod from then on; Wayne Mardle and Stuart Pyke in 3D

This makes me think that maybe Rod Studd has jumped up to number 3 in the Sky pecking order

PDC World Darts Championship Final 2011, Sky Sports 1, Sky Sports HD 1 & Sky 3D

Dave Clark presenting from the Alexandra Palace alongside Wayne Mardle, Rod Harrington and Eric Bristow

Adrian Lewis v Gary Anderson

Sky Sports commentators: Sid Waddell (whole match), Rod Studd (sets 1 to 6) and John Gwynne (set 7 onwards)

Sky 3D commentators: Stuart Pyke and Wayne Mardle - although I think Nigel Pearson or Eric Bristow may have replaced Wayne after set 6 (this was not confirmed on 2D but Wayne was back in the studio straight after the conclusion of the match)

Under-21 World Championship Final

Michael Van Gerwen v Aaron Monk - Nigel Pearson and Rod Harrington in 2D; Rod Studd and John Gwynne in 3D

During the build-up and in the aftermath of the final, Rod Studd did the live interviews on the floor (with Dave Clark interviewing the champion in the studio).

Quite a surprise that Rod Studd got to do the first half of the final on Sky Sports 1, given that he only joined the Sky Sports darts team this time last year. Congratulations to him.

3D on the Darts was superb!! Indeed Mardle and Pyke then Half way through Mardle left and Nigel Pearson came in.

Mardle is awful in the box IMO. a bit of a screaming Dean Windass type. a few don't like him but Nigel Pearson is very good, I enjoyed Pearson and Pyke... Sounded better at times than the 2D commentary looking back at that now...

I'm not Australian, but on Fox they are taking channel 9 commentary feed for their highlights...

I thought this too, but Michael Atherton made a joke about David Lloyd being referred to as an al-rounder on fox sports. I assumed this was during play. Perhaps not.

I did not see it but I am fairly sure David Lloyd was on Inside Cricket last night which airs Monday nights on Fox, so I think its fairly safe to say it was not in play.

Nasser Hussain has also made a guest appearance on Fox earlier this week when he was on Matchday Saturday
