Before the World Cup began, highlights programmes featuring different World Cups of the past were shown on various channels around the world. By listening carefully and using my own memories of the coverage (I didn't get out enough in the seventies either) I've put together this list of commentators heard on the BBC in the first 4 World Cups, and on Channel 9 in the fifth. Obviously, not all games were featured and it's likely that other commentators were used apart from those listed.

1975:England
For the first three World Cups, there were four games on each matchday, two of which were covered live by the BBC:
Peter West - a presenter for tests, but a commentator for these World Cups as there were 2 live games
Peter Walker - ex-Glamorgan & England, Sunday cricket presenter
Richie Benaud
Jim Laker
Denis Compton

1979:England
Peter West, Jim Laker, Richie Benaud plus
Ted Dexter
Peter Loader -Surrey & England, then emigrated to Australia where he was a regular for ABC in the pre-Channel 9 era; I think this was his only appearance in England

1983: England
2 commentators on air at all times was standard by this time.
Peter West, Jim Laker, Richie Benaud, Ted Dexter plus
Tony Lewis - still dividing his time between radio and TV
Tony Greig - guesting from C9
Tom Graveney
Frank Tyson (I think) - like Loader had emigrated to Australia and was a regular for the ABC and briefly on C9
A curiosity that I'm sure I'm not making up is that David Coleman presented the highlights shows, his only foray into cricket presenting (other than when it was part of Grandstand).

1987: India
The package featured only 4 games, all with the BBC team. The final, and maybe England's semi were live.
Tony Lewis
Jack Bannister
Ray Illingworth

1992:Australia and New Zealand
The package featured the C9 commentary, TVNZ had its own team operating for games in NZ.
Tony Greig
Tony Cozier
Greg Chappell
Ian Chappell
Richie Benaud
Bill Lawry
David Gower
Richard Hadlee

Thereafter there were too many voices to recognise, most of them still operating today, though it was surprising to hear Simon Mann on the 1999 semi-final for the BBC.

This is wonderful, many thanks for this. I was watching the Captururing the 79 World Cup on Sky and did wonder who the voice that wasn't West, Benaud, Laker or Dexter was. Now I know. Cheers

Off hand (and from watching ESPN Classic) I can remember Peter Williams, Grant Nesbitt, John Morrison, Richard Hadlee and Henry Blofeld working for TVNZ. There were also a couple of others who's names I can't remember. I believe Tony Grieg and possibly Bill Lawry joined them for the opening game (Aus vs NZ) and the first semi-final

From some old videos I can tell you there was also commentary on a couple of England games that weren't shown on Channel 9. I presume this was for Sky as the score graphic had the runs and wickets the 'English' way round. Comms on these games included Geoff Boycott, Mike Gatting, Bruce Yardley and also Ian Chappell

Clive Rice also did some commentary on South African games for both networks

Just checking as I was half asleep and could easily be mistaken but did I hear Ians Chappell and Botham commentating together on the South Africa game this morning?
Interesting if so as they are known to publically loathe each other

The Test Match Special team were very amused by Sir Ian doing the presentation ceremony of the England match, saying that they hadn't seen him do one before and that he was "no match for Paxman"!

They were right there, but I don't think it's the first he's done in this tournament. ESPN Star must like his interviewing style!

Presentations and tosses seem to be handed out very randomly at the World Cup - even David Lloyd who has said that he doesn't like interviewing people and who never interviews for Sky has done a few. The Botham decision was particularly odd as Nasser, Robin Jackman and Pommie Mbangwa have all done interviews regularly for Sky or Supersport and were on the commentary team for this match. The only exception to this randomness seems to be that Ravi Shastri does the presentation for every match he does.

Ravi seems to be their main man doesnt he ? I think he is probably the only name we can guarantee will be doing the final at this stage. But then again, he is very good.

No Harsha Bhogle in the comm box, i thought he worked for ESPN Sports. Is he the main host perhaps ?
