I Know Scotland and Italy had nothing to play for (ok my bias hat is on here) but I thought it was poor that our game had a very 'cheap' effort to it. One studio guest, No real updates from the touchline, and Conor Mcnamara was very bland and wrong with info on some occasions. To be honest I am not keen on Jason Mohammed as a presenter either.

I've noticed this year also, wonder a cost thing, the BBC are not host broadcaster anymore for games in Ireland and Italy. They used to be HB for games except in France. RTE in IRE and ??? in ITA run things now, clearly noticeable with the bbc logo appearing at the start of the scorebar animation etc.

I agree with you on Jason Mohammed and Connor McNamara. I could forgive McNamara for a few things with it being his most high profile rugby game on tv, but there were just too many odd comments such as when he described Nick de Luca as having an Italian sounding surname!

On the HB issue, have the BBC ever been the HB for games in Italy and Ireland, I always remember in the old days RTE used the same graphics as the BBC, but they had the RTE logo on them and wasn't the reason that the games in Italy were the last ones to be shown in HD because the BBC weren't HB for them?

He seems ( Jason Mohammed ) to have replaced Jill Douglas as the Beeb's 3rd string RU presenter. In fact, poor Jill isnt even first choice online reporter now either

BBC were always HB in IRE and ITA. BBC Graphics (if HB) don't have the BBC Yellow logo on the 'world feed' that is why RTE placed a logo in that position.

Italy have just picked up the HB this year, I don't know who covers the tournament in Italy.

That was a bit odd. I know it was a dead game, but you'd have thought there would have been room for it in a 2 hour show, especially as India v West Indies wasn't great. The BBC didn't show highlights either, but they are up on Sky Player.

BBC were only the host broadcaster for Irish and Italian games from 2003 till 2009. RTÉ were host broadcaster up till 2002, the RTÉ logo can clearly be seen on the BBC coverage of Ireland games prior to 2003.

Sky Italia have the rights in Italy, they've had them since 2010.

Some of the "balance" of these World Cup matches has being odd.

4 indian commentators v 2 West Indians

And only 1 South African used in their match against 2 New Zealanders

There are more English and Indian commentators so it is always going to be unevenly balanced. Particularly today as there is only 1 Sri Lankan and 6 English commentators (Hussain, Atherton, Botham, Lloyd, Wilkins, Greig)

But Mbangwa generally counts as a South African in these tournaments, due to him working for Supersport and being from that part of the world.

Sort of a similar point. As he played well before my time (unlike Pommie), I've never really thought of Greig as an Englishman. I know he is, but to me he's an Australian with a South African accent. And as the vast majority of Wilkins' recent work has been for Asian broadcasters, he's as good as Indian to me.

Mark Nicholas is turning more and more Aussie, but as long as he keeps up his work on Channel 5, he'll still be English to me.

Bit late this, but he also commentated on, I think, two England matches for ITV in November 1998, back when they were live on Sky with highlights straight after on ITV, because John Taylor was commentating on live Scotland qualifiers on ITV those weekends.

I wonder if we've ever had a definitive list of Rugby World Cup presenters and commentators on ITV. In 1991, Frank Bough presented the live games and David Bobin the highlights, while according to the Radio Times, the commentators were Alistair Hignell, John Taylor and Bob Symonds.

In 1995, Hignell presented - rather badly, the rugby equivalent of Matthew Lorenzo - with Trevor McDonald joining him for the opening match and final as it was an important news event too, with Mark Austin and Mary Nightingale doing the highlights, several years before they both appeared together reading the news. The RT bills just Taylor and Chris Rea as commentators, I dunno who the others were - Bob Symonds again?

In 1999, Jim Rosenthal presented for the first time, with Nicky Campbell doing the highlights and Taylor, Symonds, Wilkins and Helm commentating. In 2003, Rosenthal and Angus Scott presented, with Gabby Logan in Australia, and the main commentators were John Taylor, Nigel Starmer-Smith and Mark Robson. ITV also used the world feed commentator, whoever that was, on the only day there were four live matches, and I also remember they lost the commentary on one game and Bob Symonds took over from London, and on the highlights that night, Symonds commentated from the start.

Finally in 2007 it was Rosenthal and Martin Bayfield presenting, with Miles Harrison, Jon Champion, Bob Symonds and John Taylor commentating.

Who had the 1987 RWC in the UK, tv rights wise?

In 1987, BBC held the Rugby World Cup rights in the UK. Commentators, analysts and reporters included Bill McLaren, Nigel Starmer-Smith, Martyn Williams, Peter Wheeler, Fred Cogley (of RTE), Scott Hastings and Bill Beaumont

I think you've pretty much cracked it, Steve, although there must have been a fourth ITV commentator in 1991, as there appear to have been four group stage games played on October 9, and I don't think there was a world feed.

ITV's other two commentators in 1995, in addition to John Taylor and Chris Rea, were Bob Symonds and Mark Robson.

My abiding memory of Hignell in 1995 was of him completely fluffing a link into an ad break during presentation of one live game, then starting to remonstrate with himself just as the break bumper faded in. I actually felt sorry for him.
