Unless you have any special requirements (playing games, editing video), then just about any laptop from £275 upwards will do the job.
At the cheaper end of the market, there's really not much to choose between different brands. All the components come out of the same factories in the Far East.
Buy on price, from a shop that can offer you help (i.e. a replacement machine) if it goes wrong. Look out for deals in high street shops (Staples, Tesco, PC World, etc.) rather than buying on the internet/mail order. You might save a few pounds buying on-line, but you've got a problem if it breaks. Tesco in particular are very good about replacement of faulty items.
