DVDs, CD's and my grandmother...
Callo

Hi,

I hope this is the right place to post.

My grandmother has a CD player and we'd really like to be able to get her a DVD player as it's getting more and more difficult to find cassettes and videos for her. She no longer uses her CD player apart from the radio.

The problem she has is that she now has limited use in her arms and hands and finds it almost impossible to take the CD's out of their case and put it in the machine.

I know this is a long shot, but can anyone suggest something that could make it easier for her?

Thanks

How about a DVD player where you can pre-load a set number of discs?

I remember seeing these readily available a few years ago but I don't know how easy they are to come by today.

Pioneer and Sony used to do them, some models holding upto 400 discs.

Might be worth looking at some karaoke players too as these can sometimes hold a few discs at a time.

If you can find one that holds a decent amount of discs someone could then load them all up for her, she would then have hours of music without having to swap discs.

If the problem is the CD cases would some kind of CD storage that eliminates them help. Something like this perhaps.

Indeed they did and they were a PITA.

I know a few people who used to own them and they were all very prone to jamming.

I suspect your best bet may to be something that has a disc loading system similar to the Nintendo Wii or many car CD players where you only guide the first part of the disc in then it loads and seats itself.

Something like this:

(Which isn't available .... sorry! Slot loading DVD player seems to be the best search term .... would search more but I'm at work!)

** EDIT **

Found one!

If you copy her CDs to MP3 format on a PC then you could create a new disk which would replace several of the old ones and thus reduce the need to change disks.

the case isn't really necessary. unless you rub discs against something rough a lot over and over its not likely to be damaged just sitting there. just leave them out of the case. sure it'll freak out collectors but who cares. discs are more resilient than you'd think. as for dvd changers, loading up a carousel of those things is beyond most grandmas. let alone fiddling with it. keep it simple. find alternative cases or just stack the discs or leave them out.

Thanks for your help. I shall look into finding her a storage system and see how she copes with that. I don't think that being able to load lots of discs at once will be useful - she needs a very simple machine else she gets confused!

The ebuyer slot loading one I linked to looks pretty simple and no faffing about lining things up on trays thanks to the automatic slot loader.

i think it takes about the same dexterity to line up a slot as in a tray

I disagee.

No buttons to push.

You only have to get the edge of the disc in and it doesn't have to be lined up perfectly.

You can't sit it slightly off centre and then watch it get mangled as the tray closes.

The unit I linked to can sit horizontally, vertically or be wall mounted so you can position it in the easiest way possible for the person using it.

If you have dexterity problems, I'd say it was definitely easier.

I know this may seem a bit left-field, but why not an MP3 / MP4 player ?

If she has a limited number of CDs / DVDs these could be preloaded in and then replayed as she required.

Then all she'd need to do is learn to play them back. No fiddling around with discs etc.

I'm no fan of Apple kit - for many reasons - but my mother, who isn't great with technical things - knows how to use an i-Pod, which with few controls and a fairly logical menu seems reasonably simple.
