What to choose?? IPhone, Blackberry, HTC?

I'm due an upgrade in a couple of weeks, and am happy to stick with o2 at about £40-£45 a month.

Thing is, I don't know what phone to go for. I'd really like a BlackBerry as the ability to check emails etc. on the go for work really appeals, but a friend who works for Orange has said I'd be better off with an HTC, at which point I got toally confused as it's not a name I know. I've seen a couple of reviews now, and they seem OK, but I could do with hearing from someone who has or has had one.

Another alternativer is getting an Iphone, but this mate says that they're not that good as phones, just good at bit of everything. And as I already have a 16GB Ipod Touch, I'm not sure there's a huge amount to be gained.

Any thoughts??

Cheers

Sarah, if email is your thing I'd go the Blackberry route.

Blackberries are really really good. Very reliable and stable. The only problem is they do cost a little more, as you will need to have a special blackberry tarrif. I used to do support for Blackberries and HTC devices, and Blackberries are a dream. Good range of third party software. However, if you're going the Blackberry route, wait for the Bold.

HTC are huge in the Windows Mobile market, most of the operators own brand PDA's are made by HTC. I hate windows mobile, I used to have a T-Mobile MDA vario, and it was as stable as your average plate of Jelly, and my customers seemed to agree. Lots of Hard Reboots, and factory restores. Admittedly they've moved on a bit, but a lot of HTC diamond owners seem to be complaining of poor responsiveness. As they usually include a Keyboard, they are usually pretty good for mail, and have a good range of extra software if you need something special.

iPhones, I like em, the touch screen keyboard is something you'll take a week or so to get used to. Best in class for the Mobile web. Third party software market is still growing. Some people are complaining of Shaky 3g, but the BB Bold seems to have similar issues.

Your best bet is to go to an O2 store (Even if you don't plan on going o2) or CPW where you can see all three in action, and see which you like.

I would only ever recommend an iPhone if syncing with a Mac, it apparently works ok with Microsoft Exchange but it's definitely more geared towards the mac, which is why mine works so well for me. My wife has just got the HTC Touch Diamond and likes it, although it's a bit fiddly and sometimes a bit slow, but it's a great phone.

If it purely is for emails, then the Blackberry would win hands down every time, which is why you'll find most companies use them.

I don't like HTC, The OS just isn't very good, I would avoid it.

As you have a Touch I would go for a Blackberry, The iPhone is just a Touch with the phone, 3G and GPS.

Cheers all for the comments.

I did manage to have a play with an HTC Tytn II today and I do have to say I was very impressed, but it's different having summat for 10 mins and using it every day.

Will try and get hold of a BB next to have aply, but I don't know if/when the BB Bold will be coming out on o2, so not sure if I'll bother with it. I'll just have to see!

I have an iPhone personally, and an HTC for work.

Put it this way, I end up using my iphone for work...

Much nicer to use than the HTC, e-mails are a million times better too.

Whoever said the iPhone is geard towards a Mac is very wrong..infact, I can't think of any differences between syncing it with a PC or MAC?

As for Blackberrys....used them at my last job, and while theyre good at what they do, e-mails, I found them very unintuitive, very bland and not nice to use.

iPhone is the hands down winner for me, by a long long way.

When I plug it into my Mac it automatically syncs all my Contacts with Address Book, My Calendar with iCal, Photos with iPhoto and Music and Videos with iTunes. Does it automatically sync all those things with a PC?

Yes it does - syncs all of that, none of that or what you tell it. It's itunes so it's exactly the same feature wise on Mac and PC.

Considered a Samsung Omnia? This is the model above the Tocco that will use the Windows Mobile OS. It is of similar specification to the iPhone 3G. It is available as an 8gb or 16gb model.

Phones4U are advertising this phone now on their homepage but a lot of people on here suggest that P4U should be avoided and I think you should buy directly from one of the networks that offers this handset. At the moment it looks like Orange will be first in line to offer this to contract customers.

I can admit that I'd prefer to have this phone on O2 as I think they are the best network, main reason being is that their customer service is something I've only ever found to be excellent. Good customer service, especially from big telecommunication companies, is very hard to find. However, I'm not sure O2 will offer this handset because of its similarities to the iPhone 3G and as O2 to have exclusivity over the iPhone, I'm sure that O2 will want to be selling more of those than any other phone.

What programs on Windows are you required to use for it to sync all that stuff?

Contacts is Yahoo and Google contacts as well as Windows address book.
Calander is Google Calander.
Mail is windows mail/outlook express
Bookmarks is IE or Safari - not firefox annoyingly.

Can't seem to find a list online but if you have other compatible programs installed then they'll sync too.

I've been advised against the Omnia, as apparently it's a bit buggy at the mo.

I'm now caught between the Blackberry Curve or Bold and the O2 XDA Stellar (their rebadged HTC Tytn II). I won't be going for the BB Pearl as I don't like its looks or keypad.

Will just wait until the day I can do my upgrade, go into the O2 shop and ask to have a damn good play with the XDA and Curve, and see what I feel then.

Thanks for all the comments!

I upgraded to the Diamond on Monday and it's terrible so much so that it's going back and I am changing it for a completely different phone. I charged the phone and had it on silent the next day with Wi-Fi and Bluetooth turned off but by 5pm (same day) the battery had gone flat. The battery at the moment is only lasting until 3pm hence why it's being returned. Also I don't find it very user friendly, sluggish and when I am using the hands-free I can't end calls, I only put people on hold and the I really miss having a key-pad, but this is a personal thing. I this helps you.

This phone is so new no-one on this forum can give a brief review on it. The specs look fantastic.. just wondering if it plays streaming media like the iPhone does? i.e. BBC iPlayer , YouTube, etc.. anyone know?
