So you think that means that Apple can't develop Java for the iphone? Surely that would stop Apple from developing the only major consumer operating system that comes complete with a fully configured and ready-to-use Java runtime and development environment.

Yes Sun would need to make there pre-compiled binaries work for the iPhone

The iPhone SDK came out on February this year so Adobe have had 6 month so far.

I think we're being blinded by allegiances here.

"all the parts of the internet are on the iPhone" is wrong. I can see how some people might go out and an iphone on that advice too. They get home having signed up to outlay £600+ only to find they can't play their favourite miniclip game on their lunch hour, can't get onto their online poker site and can't listen to Radio 1 or watch streaming interviews on BBC sport.

People might quite rightly hate stuff like Java and flash but it's a huge part of the internet.

Oh well that's alright then...

the fact that they released the sdk in feburary is apples fault

if the other manufacturers can get it right.... there's nothing special about apple.

You forget that other OSs for mobile devices have been out a long time, It only took Apple around 6 month to develop the SDK which isn't bad. In comparison Symbian was out for years before Flash was developed for it.

anyone seen this.

it seems apple have got introuble for saying "all the parts of the internet are on the iPhone".

when it has no flash or java”

The article states that "Apple had argued its claim referred to availability of webpages, rather than their specific appearance."

hmm - there are plenty of webpages that I know of that are completely flash based and therefore are not available on the iphone at all - so their argument is clearly false.

Personally i'm not that impressed with Apple. People rave about them - but I just dont get it. Their software is buggy, they arent very open about future updates/bug fixes and they clearly dont listen to their customers.

I can see why people would be disappointed after this ad.

If you got the iPhone to use a site that mostly uses flash or java then you'd be very annoyed.

Some sites don't always allow you to browse on an iPhone (such as MobileMe).

To be fair, in the case of mobile me it's because the functionality is built into the phone.

intresting i know the Wii works.

but that's not really the point. the problem is not that the iPhone doens't have flash and java (or not in this context anyway) it's that they advertised it with all the parts of the internet are on the iPhone when clearly the parts of the net that are in flash or require java are not available on the iPhone.

I'm currently reading a thread on MacRumours about this, a lot of people seem to agree it's misleading but others (probably not from the UK) can't/won't understand why the ASA have pulled it. Some are reading it as "Oh noes they are forcing Apple to put flash on teh iPhone" when all Apple need to do is remove "All the parts of the internet are on the iPhone" from the voice over, no real biggie.

I hope MacDailyNews post about it as you get the real nutters on there

But isn't flash mainly used for annoying advertisments?

MDN have posted their take on the story:
Quote:
“Note to ASA: It's already off the air, dumbasses. It was an ad for the first-gen iPhone. Obviously, nothing offers "all the parts of the Internet" out of the box - there's always some proprietary codec or plug-in to download, which may or may not run on certain OSes, devices, etc. It was Apple's mistake to assume basic intelligence on the part of the viewer and for using that phrase in the U.K. where they have a stick up their collective arse over advertising that's the size of a Sierra Redwood.

Job well done, ASA. Once again, you've "protected" two (2) idiots from their own literal-minded vapidity out of a population of 62 million by "banning" an ad that no longer airs.”

Fair and balanced reporting as usual

Yep - i'm sure they would - thats why I didnt post it in there

Is it just me or are Apple taking big steps backwards. Software and hardware seems to be going more and more open source, open format and plug and play - but Apple seem to be locking everything down to their own proprietary format. Hell you cant even transfer files to the iphone without going through itunes.

That's so incredably false, I use Windows and OSX and get way more bugs in Windows software, programming for OSX is as easy as programming for windows and just as open.

Just the other day that guy who had just bought that Maplin Mini Laptop asked '"How do I install Java and Flash'.

Sadly its likely he probably bought a very crippled laptop.

Indeed it was also very misleading of Apple. Flash at the moment is an extremely vital part of the internet.
As good as the Iphone is it does them no good if they mislead people.
