randomly came across this on the food forum

Are you really saying you never go to websites that have flash on?

Actually it was licensed by Nokia and has been for some time. Its even available on Series 40 phones. Apple could license it if they wish, but have said they want to stick to open standards.

My main beef with this is that the internet ≠ the web.

It's really funny the way the iPhanatics can completely alter their requirements based on what apple offer.

flash isn't maily used for adverts no. it's meant to be rich and interactive it's often used for steam ing video. it's an important part of browsing.

It may really slow down your computer. perhaps it's time for an upgrade.

true but the ASA are just looking at what people will understand by that, rahter than what's completely, technically true.

Yeah I understand. "all the parts of the internet" is weak copy though. It doesn't even make sense.

MDN do 'unwittingly' run a few interesting stories.
The one where Pystar is suing Apple for antitrust is very balanced, at least until the MDN FUD comment appears, and without the headline of course.

I think Pystar is right. And it would be very positive news for all computer users if the court ruled in Pystars favour.

That article is all in quotes.

it's only balanced because they didn't write it, it comes from zednet.

the bits they did write, the title and the comments are bizarre. it's like someone has insulted their God, not their prefered brand of IT equiptment.

and the site sent my pop-up blocker beserk. perhaps it cos of my choice of OS.

It got plenty of mileage in the Computer department so why move it?
The topic was as about Java and Flash so could equally be in the Computer section.
THe topic was about advertising so could have been in the Broadcasting department.

What nonsense, Flash is by far mainly used for adverts, most websites use it for this including digital spy.

I have seen flash ads slow down many peoples computer and its amazing how fast the browsing experience is with flash disabled.

I like flash for online video like BBC iPlayer but prefer it downloadable as a movie file.

Rubbish, Apple don't have even close to a monoploy as they only have about 10% market share in the US. Also saying that they cant lock there hardware is like saying I should be able to build myself a custom Xbox 360 and install the Xbox 360 OS on it.

No they aren't. Apple would need a monopoly in computers for them to be correct. They don't. They are not being anti-competitive because there are plenty of other OS around that people can put on their machines.

I also don't see how it would be good news for anyone. Sure go buy a copy of OS X after the ruling and put it on any machine you like. It won't work as your Dell or whatever won't have the EFI Bootloader. If you manage to get it going you'll then hit driver issues as OS X is written for Macs and Macs alone. Apple may be forced to allow it on other machines but they won't support it and it will still be written for hardware they use in Macs which is unlikely to come in identical configurations in other machines.

Or they will do something like make an upgrade eversion available that will check for something specific on a Mac before installing for £80 and then a retail version that in theroy could work on any machine but price it at something like £500 lol.

Remember all copies of OS X you can buy in the shops are upgrade versions already, not standalone versions.

you always make me laugh.

Anything the iPhone doesn't have you don't want. not so long ago i remember.

I don't want a decent camera, i've got a separate one
I don't want GPS i'd never use it
I don't want 3G, EDGE is fine
I don't want MMS it's old technology
I don't want to be able to copy and paste
I do want Super Monkey Ball II, it's ace.

So now you actually don't want flash, you prefer that your phone doesn't have it???

Well my friend, you've obviously installed it on your computer or you wouldn't know that you don't like it. Now since the iPhone is supposed to be the whole of the net, then it strikes me that you should have it on your phone.

This shows that you talk utter nonsense as I never said half those things you listed, I infact didn't even buy the original iPhone because it didn't have 3G and would love copy & paste to be added as it can be frustrating, So if anything this proves your memory is terrible and you just make stuff up.

Your problem is that you can't comprehend that not everyone wants or uses features like MMS so the lack of it isn't as issue.

I use my phone primary for Phoning, Web Browsing, Email, Music, Movies, Games, and in my opinion the iPhone does this better than any other phone except maybe the Blackberry Bold which would have been my second choice.

What irritates me is people who have never even used the iPhone seem to think there in a position to criticise it, It goes the same for Macs, so many PC users say there rubbish and have never used one for any length of time. Nokia, HTC, Samsung, SE.... I have used various models of phones from all these manufacturers and for my usage the iPhone does it better than any of these. I have never used a Blackberry for any great deal of time and may buy a Bold just so I can give my feedback on the device but it certainly looks very good from the reviews I have seen.

to be honest i was using 'you' in the plural.

I hardly ever use MMS, but i'm glad it's there, i maybe receive 3 a month, send 1, it would makes very little difference to me if i didn't have it. but nonetheless that difference would be there. same with flash. it's not a big difference, but the difference is there.

what makes you think i've never used a mac, because i don't like them???

It certainly wasn't worded in that way at all, It was completely aimed at me...

I used the words "people" and "many PC users" not "you" as I wasn't referring specifically to you on the Mac comment.

I just tried it and it does take me to my favourites list but as its blank by default you can't go anywhere from there, I do hope they fix sharpish though for the people that do use the favourites list

No plural. there's a few of you. i can't remember what you all say. i'm not very good with with names. you know i don't see your name in another forum and think that's that swine who said that thing about Super Monkey Ball II. i don't know if it was you. the only name i really remebmber was jammers because of the iTampon thing.

my thoughts on this thread are as follows and are limitted to:

the ad was slightly misleading, i don't think it's a big deal. clearly neither do the ASA as they've just told them not to use it again.

when i read this i fully expect the consensus from the mac boys to be, 'i don't want flash, wouldn't use it if i had it' because that's their answer to everything. My phone has flash, i'm glad it does.

I also don't think it was a big deal, I just think the ASA were being picky because it was Apple, lets be honest a web browser alone even if you have flash and java doesn't allow you to use all the parts of the internet.

Only things I personally use Flash for is YouTube and iPlayer so would make no difference to me as there on the iPhone. I also found Flash Lite to be useless on my N95 as anything in Flash I tried to view wasn't supported by Flash Lite. So to sum it up I think the full version of Flash on a phone would be useful but I don't think any current phone is fast enough to support it.
