BT Master Socket
Hi, at the moment, I have a main BT socket coming in to the house, (But not the one with the test socket under the front cover). I'm decorating and need it moved and would obviously like to not have to pay for this. Does anyone know if BT are obliged to update their equipment and could I use the fact that I don't have a test socket as a bargaining tool.
If not, does anyone have any idea of cost for something like this? Cheers J. |

with regards to to the not having an NTE5, ring them up saying you would like to add your own ext'ns but do not have a NTE5 / demarcation point.
Should they still change it to an NTE5? The one I have now has this logo on: http://content.answers.com/main/cont...BT_(old_T).png and I don't know how old it is... looks ancient though. Thanks again |

I believe I have the same ones as you. I called BT to get one of those new sockets installed, they quoted me £150.
Unless you desparately want to move yours (and pay them), I would suggest avoid moving the master socket. |

Thanks unbreakable, I was going to ring BT first, but didn't want to tell them anything that would generate a charge, I also didn't hold out much hope for getting someone who knew what they were talking about, and couldn't be bothered to be transfered six times and then cut off!! unfortunately I have to move it, it's in a real stupid place, so thinking cap back on

Any good sparks could do it for a fraction of that £150.
Ten minute cash in hand job. Know one or someone who knows one? |

I had an engineer come round when I complained about a noisy line but I'm not quite sure if he was OpenReach or contracted out to OpenReach. I think he actually said he was contracted out to them. Anyway I told him I'd like the master socket moved from the living room to just inside the front door where the line comes into the house.I said that I'd phoned BT to ask and they quoted a very high fee. I asked him if he knew anyone who could move it as I was trying to improve my BB line. Anyway he said he didn't know anything about BB so I said well if you know anyone around here who could help I'd be happy to pay £20.
After he checked my line inside and out and said he couldnt find any faults he said he'd move it for me but to keep it to myself. So 15 mins later I had my new socket and he had some beer money. Very happy. ![]() It just depends who you get, some just say no. I can see their point they don't want any hassle in the future if you say something to someone else and it get's back to the wrong people. The line was a long way from the exchange so eventually I cancelled my landline and now use mobiles for calls and mobile BB for the internet. |

??Have just tried calling BT, and they want to post me out a master socket for me to fit myself???? and charge me £52.50 for the pleasure. I'll try again later and see if I can get someone who knows what they are talking about. |

I'd be happy to fit one myself, but I thought you weren't allowed to touch the BT master socket?? I could just buy a £10 NTE5 copy from the web if so.
