Anyone heard this? i really really like it I take it its a new song as its on all the time on the music channels?

I havent got any R.E.M albums but i know that they are very good and its tempting to buy one of their albums, ive heard some of their other songs (loosing your religion etc) and they are very good.

Anyway, what does anyone think of this song? I think its really cool and catchy

haven't heard the single yet - but they played it at glastonbury, along with another two new songs. they all sounded pretty good.

bad day will be on the new best of... not sure when its out - they're revealing the tracklisting song by song at www.remhq.com

the only one i can find thats out soon is their greatest hits album.

Anyway, the video is always on mtv2. The main guy is a news reporter and it shows people reporting from places where theres tornados and stuff.

The main guy (who is a news reporter) is actually lead singer Michael Stipe, and the rest of the band play other various presenters in the video.
So yeah stick out for their official Best of album because its a double disk set with all the best songs on one and some of the best B-sides on the second disk. If you love their singles its probably the best entry purchase you could make. Some of the album tracks are amazing though.

Does the new Greatest Hits span the whole of their career or just the time since their previous Best Of?

Either way, the new collection is going to be an essential purchase.

Man On The Moon
Great Beyond, The
Bad Day
What's The Frequency, Kenneth?
All The Way To Reno
Losing My Religion
E-Bow The Letter
Orange Crush
Imitation Of life
Daysleeper

The Sidewinder Sleeps Tonight

They also have a new studio album to follow after.... REM ROCK!

I read something in Q the other month and the band were describing it as some kind of personally chosen favourite tracks, rather than a "Greatest Hits" so I'm presuming it will be their whole career. The interview stated "that Shiny Happy People will NOT be included but Orange Crush will".

They also mentioned the bonus disc and said "No, Shiny Happy People will not be on that one either!"

Damn.. not enough Monster tracks on there yet.. I hope Crush With Eyeliner, Bang And Blame and Strange Currencies can get on there...

Apart from that, I cant wait (I wasnt suprised that Shiny Happy People wont be on there).

I'm an REM fan, but I'm not too keen on the new song Too repetitive IMO, it goes on for too long and sounds like a bad version of "It's the end of the world as we know it".

REM out of ideas?

they had a thing on their website for requesting songs for them to play live this on their recent / current tour. apparently they rehearsed @ 80 songs for the tour.

perhaps this best of will be based on that too?

Have REM ever actually released an official Best Of?? I know through searching on Amazon that there have been plenty of unofficial versions, but I don't think I've seen a proper one.

this would be the closest, but its not listed on their website.

AFAIK it was a release by their original label of earlier stuff when the contract ran out and they signed to warners. or something. someone else will be less vague, but i'm sure it was something like that.

just watched the *bad day* video ontheir website - loved it..Michael Stipe has the news guy down pat good to see them having fun still.

also - they're on *later...* on Oct 17.

hope they do some more shows over here again fairly soon - the set at Glastonbury was fantastic. (saw them on the *monster* tour and was far less impressed - Michael seems to be really enjoying himself these days, and it really comes across)

Yes REM really do hate Shiny Happy People and who can blame them! Lots of bands hate some of their songs and refuse to play them in concert.

Bad Day sounds good anyway.

Actually I just read on a newsgroup that Bad Day was written around 1988 with different lyrics and eventually morphed into ITEOTWAWKI. I dunno whether it's true, but it would explain why the two sound so similar...

Yeah, it was released by IRS (their previous label) as a bit of a cash in after they signed with Warners.... which explains why there's no 'ITEOTWAWKI' or 'one i love', they were both on the previous best of. So it's covering everything from 'Green' onwards.... not the best stuff of their career, but it'll do I guess

It probably is true... i'll have to check 'it crawled from the south' (essential reading for any REM fan). They did the same thing with 'All the right friends' (from the vanilla sky soundtrack), that was written in about 1981 or something and not recorded for over 20 years!

I do like 'Bad Day' though and the video is pretty cool....

(btw, Hi, I'm new here!)

Anyone know if there are two versions of this vid?

Im sure EMAP are showing a letterboxed version, while the Sky channels (which usually crop letterbox vids to 16:9) are showing a 4:3 version.

Or am i imagining it?

The Amp, Scuzz and Flaunt are the most flawed 16:9 implementations i've seen on any channel probably.

As for the REM song, I saw the video the other day, and its a very good song. Typical REM - non-sequiter lyrics, but fast paced. A friend of mine said it reminded him of Its The End Of The World As We Know It. I have to agree with him on that one, but its still a very good song anyway. The video is simple and very original too.

I do like REM Bad day. It would be a good song if it didnt repeat the chorus about 50 times at the end.

as well as the greatest hits cd, there's a dvd too with all the videos, plus

Tongue
How The West Was Won And Where It Got Us
New Test Leper
Bittersweet Me
Lotus
I’ll Take The Rain

plus live stuff from their Trafalgar Square performance :
Imitation of Life
Losing My Religion
Man on the Moon

plus interview clips spanning the last 15 years
plus a discography

and in DTS

how good is that?

Iain

PS can anyone get the live concert at www.remhq.com working? its bugging the hell out of me....

'Bad Day' is actually a very old song. It was written for the album Life's Rich Pageant (1986), but didn't make the final cut. You can find a demo version of this song on some p2p networks (it was originally called 'PSA').

However, the new version is a massive improvement over the original, even though they removed my favourite line ("I saw the light, it can't be right"). Everyone I know who has heard this song loves it, so I'm expecting a decent chart position.
