We are getting a new TV and saw this in the paper http://www.johnlewis.com/230476264/P...x?source=42263 I was wondering if anyone new if this TV is any good and if there are better/cheaper alternatives.

Also it is 720p how much difference does that make from 1080p and what would SD picture quality be like (I've heard it isn't as good on LCD/Plasma compared tor CRT).

It would mainly be used for the PS3, Blueray movies and Sky (HD&SD).

Also on a side note what are the differences between LCD and Plasma (this bit isn't really important just curiosity)

Thanks

I dont know that model that well but i would say on a 50" television watching blu-rays 1080p would be better (though not essential). Main differences between LCD and plasma being plasma tends to show SD better and usually handles blacks better where as LCD shows hd off better. which one would you be watching more of? Just evaluate what you would use it more for and maybe go to a shop and see it for yourself and then judge.

Thanks carefree

Ok I've a had a bit of a look round and found these 3 they are smaller but 1080p http://www.argos.co.uk/webapp/wcs/st...95_1500271569_

Which would be the best I am slightly swayed towards the Panasonic Plasma for the superior SD PQ.

And how bad is 'image burn' on Plasmas as this does concern me esp. if it is use for the PS3 with static images and also DOGS.

Like i said if its SD your after i would go for the panny but for PS3 and HD the sony is the one i would choose. Both tellies are very similar in contrast and there isnt much between them. As for screen burn it isnt as common a problem as it once was but can still occur if your gaming alot. I would go for the sony but that is purely my opinion.

The sony bravias have very good sd upscalers so the picture will not be that bad. prob one of the best lcds on the market. The tosh is good but not in the same league in my opinion. Also if your quick you can pick one up for £799 with a free Blu-ray or free HDD recorder from most retailers.

What retailers?

I think I'll suggest that to the big man with the cheque book esp. as the room isn't huge and 40'' would probably be better than 50'' for us.

Well i work in a electrical store in the south west and we are doing this offer. We are out of blu-rays as they are included to clear the stock as the BDPS350 is due out soon. Not sure if anyone near you has stock left but the HDD which is a RDRHXD890B is a stock line. Try john lewis or M+S.

I've just read this review http://www.hdtvtest.co.uk/news/sony-...0080822127.htm

and the TV scored poorly in the video and film mode deinterlacing. What does this mean?

It means reviews are crap!

Go and look at them in the shops and make your own mind up.

Yes but what is deinterlacing?

We will be going over the weekend before making a final decision.

De-interlacing is for 1080i or 576i, where the odd lines are transmitted first, then the even lines next - to de-interlace basically the odd lines are written to the odd lines of a memory buffer, then the even lines are written to the even lines of the buffer - the buffer is then blasted to the screen in a single instant.

Interlaced TV gives 25 frames per second, consisting of 50 fields - a normal TV displays them sequentially a line at a time, odd line sfirst, then the even lines filled in next. Persistance of vision (and of the screen) allow you to see a full smooth picture.

It's really not something you need to know about if you just want to watch TV.
