I'm not sure where the new series production team stand with the rights issue regarding BFAudio and it' stories characters. However , if they wanted to, could they produce a sequel to a BFAudio play as a tv story.
Hypothetically , they could make it current doc lite for the first part of a 2 part mid season adventure.
Part one- Doc10 and companion arrive on a planets surface.
Both are shocked as the Tardis doors are firmly locked from the inside , they are unable to leave the console room. Even more shockingly for the doctor, the scanner and information screen tells him that this is a planet which he visited and protected from an evil menace before-or so he believed. The screen shows him scores of factories used for buiding a race of cybermen , whcih he believed he had put a stop to during his 8th incarnation and the co-ordinates tell him where the Tardis has materialised is after that in his timeline.
Frustrated , he begins to tell his companion his history with this world, we then see flashbacks for the bulk of part one of the story with Doc8 and one of his companions. Towards the end of 45mins , the Tardis doors unlock and the Doctor seems mightily relieved. Both are stunned however , as the Tardis doors are forced open with a mighty explosion. Standing in the entrance are a group of humans that the Doctor recognises from his 8th incarnation. Their leader steps forward and shouts at Doc10 "You have returned Time Lord and now you will pay for your interference on this planet". A laser gun is raised at a shocked Doctor, the sting begins and onto part two a week later.......
OK I realise this is not directly related to a BFAudio play but it could incorporate a previous doctors adventure.

Nothing to do with rights - much more simply the BBC can't oblige viewers to have to buy extra product to fully understand the plot. They'd basically be plugging BigFinish.

Yep, agreed. They could never do a direct sequel to a commercially available (but unaired) story as it would be sending out the message that you have to buy the dvd/cd to know what's happened.

It was like when they brought out the Gallifrey Chronicles a few months after The First Season aired. All the kids in my A Level class went out to buy it because they thought it would explain the Time War.
I did warn them it wasn't anything to do with the New Series but they didn't listen to me. Of course because that book was tying up years of continuity in the EDA range none of them had a clue what it was about.

Equally why does it have to fit in anyway! The Doctor could arrive somewhere he has affected by his presence in the past but in a non televised adventure. Then we would all learn about past and present events on that planet within the narrative of the story and no need for 98% of the audience not to have a clue what was going on.

I have been reading the 8th Doctor novals, and not in order as I have to request them from my library, they are never there otherwise....but anyway the Gallifrey Chronicles was the first one I read....and boy was I confused...and even though I was aware that it was separate from the TV series, I still couldn't stop my brain from trying to link things to the Time War....obviously as I now have been reading more novals, I'm more than aware now that is not the case

Slightly off topic but I would really like to see Fitz as a companion on screen, I have a very lovely image of him in my mind

A character like Fitz would be very good for the TV series I feel. Bit of a loser, bit of a jack the lad and loyal to the Doctor. Also like the idea of someone from the 50's or 60's in the Tardis, give it a bit of a shake up. Doubt they would let the companion smoke on screen these days however. They overdid the fact he fancied every young girl who came into the book range though.

The 8th Doctor novels are mostly very boring, but the odd good one like Reckless Engineering and Alien Bodies made them worth dipping into. The arcs are so convoluted though and most of the times you would read a book and find it has got you nowhere (but a bit more confused)

I don't think the BBC accept the Big Finish stories as 'canon', hence they wouldn't do a sequel.

Do they have documents about what part of the DW universe is canon and what is not I doubt it.

Only fans do stuff like that surely. BBC have given the rights to Big Finish to do the audios so if anything it would recognise them as Doctor Who stories at least.

And secondly, yes I would agree that the novals do leave you more confused than you were to start off off with....I remember how much I enjoyed reading the Domino Effect, it had a really interesting angle to it, but only for the ending to leave me completely with more "whats???" circling my head than DT's Doctor has ever said.....Although they do a great job in filling the void, and I usually love the way the 8th Doctor is written, similar with the audios....

Also I was wondering, and I know its been mentioned before, but I can't remember exactly....the upcoming Christmas Episode is supposedly based on BF story, so I was wondering if any of the stories in the past four series' were also based on the audios as well???? I know Human Nature and Family of Blood were based on PC's noval Human Nature, but have they also done one on an audio???

Marc Platt who wrote Spare Parts was creditred for Rise of the Cybermen/Age of Steel they were not very alike however. Think Russell heard the original and got the original pitch from that, also I think there was some similarity to the dying bride scene in AOS.

Robert Shearman's Jubilee was adapted into Dalek in Series 1

Also there was a Pompeii story (Fires of Vulcan) but don't think that was an adaptation just a coincidence of places really

Also Blink was adapted from a story in an annual called What I Did in my hiolidays by Sally Sparrow and A Gareth Roberts comic strip A Groatwort of Wit with Will Shakespeare in it appeared about 18 months before the The Shakespeare Code was on TV. Maybe it give RTD an idea which writer to use for that story.

And judging by Morrissey's clothes and the pics i have seen so far, its a possibility that the rumour is true. Its a good choice for a Christmas special (It was a BF christmas special release in fact)

If they wanted to do a sequel to one, they'd have to accept they were canon, which would cause contradictions all over the place, much like the doctor who novels.

Technically no story you have to pay extra for, on top of the licence fee, can be considered canon as the bbc clearly state that under no circumstances can stories you have to pay extra for be part of the main storyline, as mentioned on this thread. The bbc have never clearly stated this with regards to DW though, maybe because it'd harm sales of DW in other mediums. And of course it would be messy with some big finish being canon and some not- for example Minuet in Hell would have been put out on bbc7 if there was a way of making it suitable for pre watershed, which there isn't apparently, leaving it in a grey area. Also that'd mean Death Comes to Time, in which Ace is a timelord and the 7th doctor dies at the end of, is canon!

I've not heard it but I believe the BF 40th anniversary story Zagerus suggested there is a DC comics style multiverse operating in DW to explain the fact some stories plots clash with each other. And at this point my brain begins to hurt. They're just stories, take anything you want from 'em, okay, okay???

That's correct. A few years ago, the major soap operas went through a phase of releasing direct-to-video specials. While the videos for Emmerdale, Brookside and Coronation Street concluded storylines started in the programmes, the BBC's EastEnders videos went over old ground and added nothing to the ongoing plot except rubbish comedy. (The Mitchells performed a striptease to Kung-Fu Fighting.)

IIRC, the BBC's Royal Charter forbids drama programmes being used to promote commercial products. It's fine for the continuity announcer to mention the BBC's own merchandise after the main programme, though.
