What does the USB socket do next to the card slot at the front as there is no mention of the socket in the manual?

According to the chipset manufacturer's block diagrams there are 2 USB interfaces for Hard drive use. One is clearly inside the box, I think this is meant for an external drive, however TUTV have disabled it.

This is the least of the things wrong with their recorders. Latest software mnakes them completely unfit for purpose (no more series links) so you're best off taking it back for a refund.
