Hi All,

I have a Philips 42pf5421 LCD TV and my remote is not working. The fault first occured about 6 months ago. I changed the batteries to no avail. I purchased a replacement remote and it has been working up until now.

The light on the remote flashes when i press a button, the corresponding light on the TV does not flash. I've pointed the remote into my camera and i can see the IR flashing. When i used my SKY remote on my TV, the TV works as expected. I can't get my head around it. Usually when this problem occurs, i remove the battery whilst keeping the AV button pressed and then replace the battery and the remote works for a few seconds and then dies again. The problem now is the remote does not work at all and i am stuck to watching BBC1 as i cannot switch to HDMI to get my V+ box working.

Any help or advice?

Thanks in advance

Sounds like a faulty TV. How long have you had it?

approx 2 years!

I cant understand it though, the remote is clearly working but having no effect on the telly. However the SKY remote operates it ok!!! Problem is i cant switch to HDMI via SKY remote cause of the crappy Philips setup!

What sort of lights do you have in the room. Does it work if the lights are turned off.

If you have those newish energy saver types, they have been known to interfere with some IR remote controls.

Not necessarily. We have a Sky remote that does exactly as yours but has no effect - until it gets a hard slap on my knee cap. It then works............. for a while.

Sounds like a classic 'dry-joint' (dodgy connection) in our case & possibly yours too.

Try a hard slap on the back of the remote even risk 'knee-capping' yourself, like me to see if it gives you the same result. If it does then you need to get the soldering iron out if you have one/are able.

I'll get 'round to doing mine one day but as I have a spare RC plus a still functioning kneecap...........................

I've tried the old remote as well, same thing? Surely they can't both be bust and display exactly the same symptoms?

Quite possibly, it may be a flaw in the remote controls?. As your Sky remote works it all the time, it's obvious that the TV doesn't have a problem.

Oooo, yes they could!

Faulty batch
Faulty design
etc...

Anyway. Have you tried whacking it yet!

One of my old lecturers used to say: 'If in doubt give it a clout'. Seriously, try it. Gentle ones for a start then harder. I'm NOT suggesting you throw it at a wall or anything quite as violent but believe me, the amount of things I've diagnosed by tapping away at - revealing a dodgy joint - and then simply fixed.

I could have made fortune if I wasn't so honest.

Or........if you don't fancy that: Get a different, 'All-in-One' remote to replace your original ones.

I smashed the remote into smithereens. LOL as I found another solution

Using your Sky remote press TV + Help. this will bring up the menu to switch scarts/HDMI etc

on the side of the telly press the channel up + down buttons to move and select HDMI 1 for example. Then press the volume button on the side of the telly to make the selection. Finally I can watch some decent telly!

Thanks for your help guys

you could be amazed what BRAND new batteries could do,give it a try ,youve nothing to lose, make sure there good quality, although the light still worked for a while the battery migh have just been to weak for your t.v. ( i know your remote flashed but that really doesnt take a lot of power) then it stopped flashing altogether ,hounestly ,get some new batterie's ,(not the one's from your sky ,they might be powerfull enough for your sky box ,but not your t.v. , ,before you do anything ele's get NEW batteris and give it a go, all the best
