Shaohsing rice wine
degsyhufc
29-08-2008
Been cooking more chinese food at the moment, primarily down to uber babe Ching-He Huang

Anyway, around here I can't seem to find Shaohsing rice wine. Tesco or Adsa don't seem to sell it. Sainsburys apparently sell Chinese cooking wine but I haven't seen it in local stores.
I don't fancy the online options as I only need this ingredient and it would be a waste of delivery charges.

Anyone know where to get it? or what about the Dry Sherry alternative. There are about a dozen different types of Sherry in Asda, so what do you use?

The other week I had an urge to get drunk and the only thing in was half a bottle of red wine and the bottle of sherry we use for cooking, red wine and sherry really isn't a good combo.

No idea where you can get it from, most places have a chinese supermarket where you no doubt could get it.

Snap. I've been looking for it everywhere as well.

I eventually managed to find it in a small local Chinese food shop we have here in Ipswich - it's quite pricey though - £4.99 for a bottle.

Does your town have anything similar?

No, we don't have a Chinese supermarket AFAIK. I looked on Yell and Google and the closest to it would probably be a few shops in an area of Newcastle.

How about the Dry Sherry. What type would be used? There seems to be several different ones.

That website does sell it for £3.95 however, the estimated postage is £6.97 which is what the OP wanted to avoid.

Even in London I find it hard to find Shaohsing rice wine in my area. Chinese cash & carry stores have it, and obviously you can find it in london's Chinatown.
Funny that non of the big supermarkets carry it. A good substitute is Sainsbury's Pale Dry Fino Sherry £4.50p for a 75cl bottle.
Avoid the rice wine vinegars sold in supermarkets

Two years later and my local supermarkets still don't stock it. I've been using sherry instead.

I found some earlier today about a 25 min bus ride away from my flat in N. London. I know your up north but for anyone in London check out Loong Fung stores. They have the real deal Shaoxing wine, they also sell hardware like woks, cleavers, etc.

a couple of links.
