Poirot (Collection 4)
The Very Best of Sheryl Crow - The Videos £5 and £2 respectively from a market stall. As new condition. I've just finished reading David Suchet's book 'Poirot and Me', and I'm really looking forward to re-watching these short story and novel adaptations again. I'll probably end up buying Collections 1 to 3 eventually, too. Not so keen on some of the later adaptations, though. Always been a fan of Sheryl Crow, and I'm pleased to find this compilation so cheap. |

'Millennium' (the original Swedish versions of 'The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo', 'The Girl Who Played With Fire' and 'The Girl Who Kicked the `Hornets' Nest'). This is the extended edition of the three films, reworked as a mini-series for television with its aspect ratio altered to 16 x 9 from 2.35 : 1. Overall, it is nearly two hours longer than the equivalent cinema running time. It comes with options for Swedish with English subtitles, or dubbed in English. The dubbed version sounds a bit American at times, but there are enough Swedish accents to suggest that many of the cast did their own dubbing. Best of all is Noomi Rapace's performance as Lisbeth Salander. I don't think there is a Best Actress in a Foreign Language Film Oscar, or she would surely have won it.

I ordered a copy of the Roberto Rossellini and Ingrid Bergman film 'Europa 51' from Amazon without really checking it first.
It turns out that there is only one subtitle track and that is in Italian. My only options if I want to watch the film are now: 1. Learn Italian 2. Buy a region 1 Blu-Ray player and get the three disc Criterion Rossellini/Bergman collection. 3. Take it on the chin, put the DVD on the shelf anyway and wait patiently for an English subtitled version to be released. Edit: Just found the Criterion version on DVD. So option four is now to pay £50 for three Rossellini films (for the second time in three months). |

Recent, and all from CeX.....
Upstairs Downstairs series 1 and 2 - The original seventies version. I'm on watching these now. Great stuff. Enjoying some of the commentaries, too. Must get series 3 to 5. The Darling Buds of May (complete set) David Copperfield (1999 version) The Shining (1997 tv series. Haven't seen this before. Will be interesting to compare it with the Kubrick film, of which I'm not a big fan) The Adventures of Young Indiana Jones (Volume 2, The War Years. I could have bought the other two sets, too, but these are the episodes I mostly remember enjoying) The First Great Train Robbery (1978 film starring Sean Connery. An old favourite of mine) Escape To Victory and U-571 (Meh, cheap enough) |
