Been buying a lot of older and obscure movies lately, often ones I have not see for years...can usually be had quite cheap online -
The Deadly Affair - 60's John Le Carre spy drama with James Mason, Harry Andrews, Simone Signoret, Maximillian Schell. Directed by Sidney Lumet, with a great non-touristy looking London, a very realistic, grimy look and interesting use of hand-held camera. Otley - Tom Courtenay. Not seen this for a while, Courtenay's petty thief gets mistaken for a murderer, and he goes on the run. A comedy, if I remember right. But not received it yet. Box set of the Man From Uncle Movies - ok, they were 2 tv episodes stuck together with newly filmed bits. Quality ranges from good to pretty dire, but they are ok for a bit of sixties spy nostalgia. The Accused - Jodie Foster, Kelly McGillis. Some of it looks a bit clunky now, the legal jargon does not always hold up...but its still a very powerful movie, and the rape scene (for a mainstream movie) is truly disturbing. A Sense of Freedom - actually a Scottish TV play from 1979 about notorious Glasgow hard man Jimmy Boyle. Uncompromising stuff for the time. I vividly remember Boyle being in solitary and regularly being beaten up in the cell by the wardens...so he covers himself and his cell in his own faeces, and when the wardens come in he looks at them and says 'Whassamarrer boys? Mah blood turns ye on, but mah shite makes ye cringe, eh?' Rosemary's Baby - only ever saw this once, after I had seen the Exorcist. And I hated it. But I know it was because I had been told it was also supposed to be the scariest film ever etc...and I really didn't get it at that age. Due for a re-watch very soon. |

Just bought
eighteen DVDs from Age UK, for 29p each. Only watched two of them beforeAny Given Sunday The Butterfly Effect Chronicle Contagion Deep Blue Sea Hard Candy Kill List Kissing Jessica Stein (Have seen before) L.A. Confidential (Have seen before. Sealed) Layer Cake Madison County (Sealed) Mrs Brown Next Night at the Museum The Terminal The Wolfman Wrong Turn On TV: Shirley Bassey (Tried this one already. 145 minutes of her peformances on tv shows, ranging from 1971 to 2005. A keeper.) At that price I don't mind 'taking a risk' on a film that I haven't even heard of before. The ones I like I'll keep, and any I don't like will probably go back to a charity shop, because CeX trade-in values are mostly 1p now for mainstream films. |

The Incredible Hulk (season 2), £2, CeX - Haven't seen any of this series since the early '80s. Looking forward to re-visiting it. I'll probably recognise some scenes.

I picked up another 4 for £1..........
The Eagle (2011) G.I. Jane (1997) Robin Hood (2010) - Director's Cut, 16 minutes longer than the theatrical release. Seems the longer version is the only one available here on DVD, anyway. Run Silent, Run Deep (1958) Only one of those I've seen before is Robin Hood, and that was at the cinema. |

Midsomer Murders - A Collection of Ten Investigations
Midsomer Murders - A Further Ten Investigations (The Second Collection) £2.99 each, Age UK charity shop. Also, from CeX....... Along Came A Spider - 50p. Sequel to Kiss the Girls Jesus of Nazareth - 50p, 1977 miniseries. Disappointed to find that this is a cut version, though. It has a runtime of 270 minutes, but apparently the uncut version is much longer. Oh well..........

The Violent Playground. Watched it tonight and was worth it for the Liverpool locations alone. David McCallum was pretty good in it though! As was Stanley Baker.

Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning
It is actually very decent. Check it out. Jordana Brewster in a horror movie.. what more could you want!? I'm also loving watching some obscure older movies. Modern movies this year have been poor. |
