One For All SV1100 remote extender

I saw one of these remote extenders in Maplin today and couldn't get my head around how it works. Can someone explain this to me? How does the replacement transmitter-battery work? Where is it getting its remote commands from?

i purchased one of these at the weekend! my local currys digital closed down and they had a sale on so i got one for £15.

I was hoping to be able to control a freeview box in the living room from the kitchen (freeview box is tuned into the kitchen tv through RF) however the signal isn't very strong, it'll go through 1 wall fine but isn't very reliable through 2 walls, our house is old and the walls are extreemly thick so I have to stand in the kitchen/dining room doorway to change channel, still much better than walking through to the living room I was going to get a cheap freeview box for the kitchen but didn't really want the extra clutter in the kitchen.

How it works though I haven't a clue! The RF transmitter is tiny and I can't see how it would see the IR signal from the remote.
I know when you point a remote close to an AM radio the radio makes a noise so maybe its something to do with that signal that is generated?

Hmm, hadn't thought of that. It's very clever, whatever it's doing!

I was thinking of using it for a kitchen remote too, but it would need to go through 3-4 walls, and suspected it wouldn't be very efficient at transmitting.

However, I still want one just because it's such a cool idea.

Some branches of Richer Sounds have a few of these at the "clearance" price of £9.99 (in store only).
