This is someting that you have to decide on for yourself. If there was a 'correct' setting then the manufacturers wouldn't bother putting controls on their products to adjust the sound output. Start off with the 'middle' setting (you might feel a small notch as you rotate the knob), and then play a film with some nice loud sound effects - some sci-fi for example and just play around with the controls until you get a balance that you like. Bear in mind that a lot of the dialogue will be on the centre channel with most of the effects on the front left and right. Make sure you listen while sitting in your usual position - this may sound different to when you are kneeling in front of the surround sound controls so check the docs to see if you can adjust it with a remote. Have fun.

It depends very much as Red Earth says on your local conditions.

But for what it's worth, I set all five speakers to the same volume level, then I increased the front centre (dialogue) one by around 10%

I then increased the rears by around 5%, before bringing up the sub woofer to fill in the rest.

It sounds great - but you need to decide what you like best.

You can buy test discs to sort it all out, or if you look in the opening titles of some DVDs for the THX logo and click on it, you'll get more help.
