Apparently a record shop in France sold a copy of this yesterday by mistake. Bet the record company are pleased with them! Anyway it's leaked.

Edit: and I think all pirates should be taken out and shot, just in case anyone thinks this post is encouraging anyone to do it.

While it was tempting NOT to listen to this it was, of course, even more tempting TO listen. It sounds fantastic so far. Only ten tracks but good god the amount of material crammed into each!

The opener, That Was Just Your Life, is gonna have fans going MENTAL (or perhaps METAL!!!)! It's Justice reborn in 2008. Not that it literally IS Justice-sounding, because it would be all tinny and everything, make no mistake, this is NEW Metallica, a bolt out of the blue. Also, everyone should just finally accept that Hetfield is never going to sound like he did 20 years ago. His voice changed as it got older. But to say his vocals are weak would be stupid. He still has great power.

After St Anger (which I loved but can understand why some wouldn't with it's harsh production) this was the logical step. It sounds crisp and commercial but not in a bad way. Just go back and listen to Lightning or Justice and see how commercial parts of those albums sound and that's what you've got here. It doesn't make me think of the black album though. The End Of The Line actually does sound like a St Anger track, Sweet Amber or something.

Gonna have to listen to this a lot more before judging but I'm loving it atm.

I actually think it's better than And Justice For All...., based on one 3AM listen.

It is definitely pre black album goodness! Favourite tracks so far are "End of the line" and "The Judas Kiss"

I'm not downloading the album as I'd rather buy it, but I'm listening to the songs on YouTube.

Wow. Just wow. Surely one of the greatest returns to form of all-time? The complexity of AJFA + melody of Black album = Sheer brilliance.

After more listens I think a LOT of Death Magnetic is going to polarize fans, especially if they don't have an open mind. Take All Nightmare Long, for instance, IMO one of the ballsiest songs they've ever done, but some diehards might not like it's commercial nature (it should definitely be a single).

Also, who would have thought a Metallica song could start with piano? I won't say which track that is, find out for yourself, but let's just say it's the big 'slow' song on the record, akin to say Nothing Else Matters, though it will have haters of Hetfield's more country-like growling something else to whine about. It probably is the weakest on the record, sadly.

Some of the tracks on this album have to rank up there with their best work ever. Incredible.

Sure am.

Album absolutely rocks, on my third listen now - Judas Kiss is my fave at the mo, and surprisingly for me - U3! Only behind MOP and TBA for me at the moment in terms of greatness.

Sounds great so far. Am about half way through. Not really taking notice of lyrics at this point just enjoying the music.

Shame that Kirk still hasn't learnt how to use that wah-wah pedal

It takes a few listens before a lot of it sinks in - some trimming of a minute or two here and there may have helped a little - but overall I really like it. Rather than compare it to older stuff I just like it for the album it is and I think that helps give it a fair hearing. Too many folks on the web are giving it major grief for not being MoP or RtL when it never was going to be in the first place.

Take "Suicide and Redemption" for example. I had a bit of a downer on this track on first listen as being rather weak. After a few listens I'm starting to get it now. It's still needing maybe the first four mins trimmed down to one (10mins for an instrumental - phew!) but the latter half especially is actually a top notch classic rock Led Zep / MSG inspired groove. I think it just felt a bit out of place in amongst the thrash and metal sound. From the point the twin guitar attack starts around five mins it never looks back. Hell, they even let The Swamp Monster have a little bass breakdown in it !

As mentioned earlier in the thread, some folks will just dismiss this as not being like the old stuff but I actually like it for the same reason. If you want to hear to the old albums then slap them on.

This is a very good addition to the Metallica roster, and a great metal album in it's own right. The odd bit of trimming here and there would have done no harm but if that's the worst first thought then it must be doing something right overall !

@performingmonk: Excellent point. I did the same thing in the lead up to this and cranked through the older albums in full. I was surprised when hearing the albums rather than recalling from memory just how straight many parts of those early albums were - certainly not the constant thrash-fest my 40yr old memory had me think. "Justice" especially - far more riff and groove than shred.

Oddly, doing so has made the band a couple of extra £

I had the normal edition on pre-order (I'm a sad fan like that) so I had absolutely no qualms grabbing the leak straight away. I like it so much I've cancelled that order and slapped one in for the digipack edition for a dearer price.

Not every "pirate" fails to buy music but that's a conversation for another thread another time

I'm trying to avoid listening to this until next Friday. I've heard The Day That Never Comes, My Apocalypse and Cyanide so far and just listened to 'The Judas Kiss' for the first time today. Whooaa.

Going by peoples favourites on the album, Judas Kiss, All Nightmare Long and Broken Beat and Scarred seem to be getting the biggest praise.

Something to look forward to considering I haven't heard the so called better stuff yet.

Broken, Beat & Scarred sounds like it could be a new classic. It's definatly a head rolling riff.

Strangely enough, I picked up a resemblance to mid 90s Megadeth at the end of the track.

I've ordered the 5 LP box! It's 45rpm (for quality) so it's just one song per side!! One of the main reasons I've done this is the dodgy digital mastering done for the CD. Just listen to how the drums often distort, that's because it was mastered too loud, like many of Rick Rubin's Red Hot Chili Peppers albums - Californication in particular, but it's also on Stadium Arcadium, which is why I own the LPs of that too!

Many people won't care about this but it doesn't do your ears any favours when it clips all over the place. Vinyl all the way! It can't digitally distort on vinyl because vinyl isn't digital!!!

Thoughts on the album guys?

I love it - it's even good enough to break into their 'unbreakable' first four albums IMO.

When I first listened to the opening 2 tracks, it was like listening to Justice if it was just written this year.

The album is old and new at the same time. Love the heavyness mixed with funky sound. All Nightmare Long has one awesome chorus. Then again so do many of the other songs.

Sleeper hit of the year!

It takes a few listens and the tracks then start to separate a bit more - it's a lot to take in on the first spins.

Justice -> Death -> Black = what it feels like in their timeline

I think Broken, Beat & Scarred is definately my song of the moment. I said in a previous post that the end has a hint of Megadeth. Just listening to ...And Justice For All and I also think that the main riff has a hint of Harvester of Sorrow.

My fav songs are That Was Just Your Life, All Nightmare Long and The Unforgiven III. Such an immense album! Hopefully it'll get the press attention it deserves, but somehow I doubt it.

The DS music reviewer decided to review the New Kids On The Block over this. ¬_¬
