My telly is once again in for repairs, only a month and a half since the last time it was repaired. It wouldn't be so bad, but its only a little over 2 years old.

Rather than throw money into what is rapidly becoming a black hole (the telly (Matsui) only cost £160 new, and the last repair was £60!) I have been thinking of getting a new TV, hopefully a 28" widescreen.

For obvious reasons, I'm not going for another Matsui, but financial constraints mean I am still looking at the bottom end of the price range. Beko seems to do the cheapest option, which gets some good reviews, but looked a bit grainy. The other option is a GRUNDIG set, which seems pretty well specced for the price, and the picture seems good enough (some reviews mention the sound output is poor, but all my audio goes through the stereo anyway, so I'm not too bothered)

However, the only way to judge RELIABILITY is to ask if anyone has any experiences of Grundig and what they thought of them. They seem to be a bigger name than the rest in their price range, but I'm aware of the old adage that you get what you pay for.

Sadly, my limit is around £300.

Any comments on GRUNDIG quality/reliability?

Thanks!

I don't have one myself but my brother has had one for about 5 years and he hasn't had any trouble with it at all.

Picture quality is good and the sound is not too bad either.

I had a big screen Grundig stereo TV for over 12 years and it was a superb set.

However it was made by Grundig in Germany and I'm sure that nowadays, Grundig are now just a front name for Dixons/Curries Group since they pulled out of the British market.

For good budget stuff, I would look at Samsung and LG.

The new Fusion brand is about to be launched - although it's made by Beko of Turkey.

Goodmans/Alba/Bush can be OK if you get a good one.

Schnieder from Asda is pretty good and some of it comes with a three year guarantee, but they can be difficult to set up.

Bit of a gamble really - but a good warranty is very useful.

LG are very good value for money - and you have answered your own question with the word "brilliant"...

this is really funny

I'm not going for another Matsui
about 4 - 6 months ago grundig went bust!

but about 3 years ago currys did a deal with grundig to sell some of their products (i.e. tvs etc in germany) and also to produce "grey goods" (i.e. rebadge their own product as grundig) - which with grundig finished production (ie bankrupt) is why grundig product is still on sale!

currys own the brand matsui!, so all of the tvs, stereo, dvd's, and vhs are all rebranded matsui now!

(in fact the only tv which was non grey product which has being sold in the uk in the last 3 years was a idtv called a argento)

- this is why you can go to curry and find tv ect which are grundig / matsui which look the same!

Aaaaaaargh! Very sneaky.

Well I bit the bullet last night anyway, being tv-less had got just too much to bear - thanks for all the suggestions.

In the end, my wallet got the final decision, and Currys had presumably mispriced the flatscreen 28" Grundig at £299, as it was £359 elsewhere in the same store!

After a bit of haggling, I eventually got it for £265, which was far and away a better price than any of the comparable flat widescreen 28" brands. I'm quite happy with it, but I'll let you know if my worst Matsui nightmare comes back to haunt me.

Fingers crossed!

Cheers.

Have a look round the back to see where it was made - you never know - it might be a "real" Grundig.
