TV Set Up Question

Right, this is probably a very stupid question but here goes. I have a Sony 32FQ70 and I've always had the screen set to widescreen. Now when I was watching Prioson Break on Sky1 last night I started to fiddle with my TV settings as the screen didn't seem right (the SK was missing from the Sky1 icon on the left of the screen).

I changed the TV settings to SMART, and seemed to get more on the left of the screen but less on top.

So, was Prison Break in widescreen last night? My settings on Sky+ are set to 16:9, so what am I doing wrong?

Its nothing to do with your widescreen settings. Its the fact that Sky's new logos are outside the safe area for transmission.

Does your tv have an overscan option? If it does turn it off and this should solve it. Lots of tv do not show the full transmitted picture, but instead overscan it leaving you losing anywhere between 1% and 7% of the picture at the edges. In order for all Tvs to see onscreen logos/Graphics there is a defined 'safe area' for 16:9 and 4:3 broadcasts. This ensures that all logos are within the 7% border. (This number maybe incorrect but the principal stands).

It is a holdover from CRT but is not really needed on LCD/Plasma but some still seem to do it.

Edit: See here for more information re Safe areas
