I have just sold my HD-DVD player and discs so i have decided to use the money to buy a Blu-Ray player. However i cannot decide between these two players.

Samsung BDP-1400

or

Samsung BDP-1500

I've heard good reviews about both players but i was hoping for a few pointers from anyone who has one of the above players.

Any advice would be helpful

Thanks in advance

The Samsung BDP1500 is the better player simply for just one reason and that is that both players are exactly the same except this one supports blu-ray profile 1.1 (if you don't know what that is Google it!) which to some people is useful but other people personally see pointless! It is only £50 more expensive and if i was you i would want to make myself as future proof as possible so i would get the BDP1500. But i would also look into some of the Sony players since they did invent part of blu-ray so should be better but are more expensive! Do you have any particular requirements???

I don't tend to bother with special features, i maybe watch the extra documentries so i wouldn't bother with BD Live so as long as the player can play the basic movie i'm not fussy.

I've had a look at the SONY range and they are a bit far out of my price range.

I would really go with the more expensive one, it might not be important to you now, but you'll never know when something takes your interest, you'll be more pissed off that your player won't support playback of these features. Best to have a player which is more up to date on standards than one that is out of date.

Ok, I had a change of thought i would go for the more expensive one as newer versions like profile 2.0 or stuff like that may come features that you may regret and it's only an extra £50 which might be alot but i can guarantee in the long run your be a lot happier! Like i say make yourself as future proof as possible regardless you think you need the features because if a newer version of the blu-ray profile comes out and it has features you want! Then if your player doesn't support it then your going to have to buy a whole new player alltogether!

IN SIMPLE TERMS GO FOR THE SLIGHTLY MORE EXPENSIVE ONE!!!

If you do go for the Samsung BDP1500 Black (Blu-ray player), you can get it cheaper than the £199.95 that richer sounds have it for, as Electro Centre have it for £166

I've had another look at the SONY players and the S300 seems a good price. Is this one any more advanced than the Samsung players or is it just the same?

If you must get a standalone get a Panasonic

If you want to wait 60 seconds for the tray to open from standby then thats the one to get.

However I guess you are used to that with your HD DVD player.

A PS3 works faster than any standalone.

Unless budget is tight its the best machine for Bluray at the moment - just forget its a games console - I have

Unfortunately my budget won't stretch to a PS3 otherwise i would go for that option.

I have heard that the S300 is on the slow side but as you say i am used to waiting for boot up with my Toshiba.

I tried a Sony 300 for a short time and did not like it.

If either Samsung is Profile 1.1 go for it

I doubt you'll find better machines in that price range for quite a while

The BD-1400 is only £159 on Amazon (dispatched and sold by Pixmania)

I've also been thinking of buying this blu-ray player now that I have found the Samsung TV I want for alot less on dabs than with currys

I was considering one of the Samsungs also but i saw some poor reviews- mainly concerning a juddery user interface and poor DVD upscaling. Bluyar PQ wasn't considered to be the best either.

I must admit seeing a Samsung along side a Panasonic player, i could see what they mean. The new sonys will be out soon S335 and S355 aswell as the Panasonic BD35 and BD55

There is absolutely no difference in picture quality between any of the BD players (depite being told this I have checked them out). The review you refere to is very old & out of date, it relates I believe to a BDP 1400 with the first Firmware issue & was corrected very soon afterwards. All BD players are designed to play BD discs, SD is simply a bonus, however it is nothing like as bad as some would make you believe. In fact it is often better than a typical cheap upscaling DVD player! I have had a Samsung BDP 1400 for 8 months now & would not swap it for any other current player, it's never missed a beat on any of the 90 BD discs I have put through it. I also have a Onkyo 875 Amp. with built in Reon HQV upscaling chip (which is as good as it gets) but even setting the Samsung to min resolution & letting the Reon do upscaling only shows marginal improvement. I would say rather than reading Biased reviews often by people who don't really have a clue it is better to try something yourself

The BD P1400 is a fine player, however if I was buying now I would go for the Samsung BD P1500 or new Sony BD350 both have their own merits. Both of these players are profile 1.1 out of the box with profile 2 later by Firmware, the main benfit however is that they both have facilites to add memory via USB which can only help with the amount of Java heavy discs being produced.

The old Sony 300 is an awful slow machine, some discs can take up to 5 minutes before they play, whilst the BD P1400 is not the fastest at least most disc are playing between 45 seconds & at worst 2 minutes.
