thanks, Marky

You've convinced me

It seems evident that a presenter of any music show would be better off knowing the history of pop music, if for no other reason than to demonstrate an enthusiasm for the subject

I guess that my apparently stubborn view that she need not know anything about ' credible' music reflects my ignorance of what TOTP is these days, not having watched it for years

I have rather assumed that it is just one endless boy band after another, none of which have a shelf life of more than a year or two, and none of which produce anything remotely worth using up a brain cell in introducing them to the screaming 13 year olds who watch. if this was the case then I humbly submit that knowledge of ' credible ' music would not be needed

But I agree that TOTP could be a stepping stone into the huge range of music output from the Beeb and if Kate is to take advantage of these opportunities she will have to show knowledge and enthusiasm for the subject

If, as it seems from your and AM's posts she is not up to this, then I guess introducing boy bands will be the limit of her career

The omen's don't look good, but let's see how she gets on

I agree completely with you. I thought myself that she might have to introduce an act with a bit of intro.
The presenters often do that...They don't just say.."Here's Atomic Kitten"...and that's it.

If she say, introduced the new Chemical Brothers single with a bit of an introduction such as "The pioneers of bigbeat are back..."...we know that Kate Lawler is likely to say something on the end like.."...Whatever bigbeat is"...
(She assumes that nobody else knows either)

It's just that kind of thing that exposes her on RI:SE.
When she comes across something she doesn't know, she shows her ignorant attitude by scoffing, or sneering at it, as though she's thinking, that if she doesn't know, then not many other people will either...
She actually seems to think that it is an admirable attribute to show a lack of knowledge,.....she really does seem to think that.

It looks like a way for her to try and undermine knowledge by attacking it with ignorance and ridicule.
It really does sometimes appear that she actually thinks that people are as thick as her. So she doesn't realise that instead of people identifying with her comments,.they're actually laughing at her.

There's probably been a few TOTP presenters who didn't know that much about what they were talking about,..but they have probably hidden it well.
Kate is really bad at hiding her lack of knowledge. It appears like she is actually proud of it, and wants to shout to the world about it.
We've seen RI:SE,..so we've also seen how Kate can't resist just making comments that expose her stupidity and ignorance...On TOTP she'd probably read out something like. "Trip Hop", and shrug her shoulders pulling a mocking weird face, thinking it must be something to do with old people or sumpfink.

Another one on the damaged credibility list,.is Angus Deaton.
And spectacularly falling from grace, was the evangelical preacher Jimmy Swaggart.
AM, you have perfectly encapsulated the feature that I find most objectionable in Kate. It's this attitude, more than the stupidity or the ignorance, that really alienates me. She seems to think it's cute to be thick and to know nothing about anything. Sadly, there are some men who also think that is cute in women, but that attitude should not be encouraged.

Whilst I think the forum almost totally ignores Kate's very positive qualities, I think it right to concede that repeated comments that it was 'before I was born' etc do her no favours.

RG, I appreciate this concession, but what do you see as Kate's 'very positive qualities'? It may be that the forum (with a couple of exceptions), rather than ignoring them, doesn't recognize them.

You want blood? I'm also seeking to eliminate myself from inclusion in your 'some men' phrase.

Seriously, I do believe she has some positive qualities which I hope will lead to better things. Please indulge me for the moment, because I want to post something sensible and considered in the next week or so on Kate's future (while she's on holiday).

I resent people forgiving Kate's ignorance simply because of her age. She is 23, isn't she? The same age as me! I am a journalist and would never dream of interviewing someone whose background I hadn't researched. And if I am ignorant I keep quiet about it - or ask questions in an intelligent manner!

Also - I may have been born in 1979 but I am fully aware of events that happened before then. It's called a desire to learn, which Kate clearly does not have.

I totally agree Special hat. Kate wants a presenting job off the back of BB, but she doesn't seem prepared to put some research into it. It must be long hours and hard work, but if she wants the job and is seen to be worth the money she is getting paid, then she needs to put a lot more effort into it.I personally don't think she is cut out for presenting.

Mind you, not all the blame can be laid at her feet, what were C4 thinking of putting Kate in that job in the first place, just because she won BB. They only have themselves to blame.

I'm sure Our Katie is very well aware that that was the year William beat Harold in the Anglo-French Conker championships

Harold kept an eye out for him at Dover and after the contest William was known for the rest of his life as The Conkerer

The French were so chuffed that the good folks of Bayeaux made a quilt, an idea which Endemol pinched for CBB2

This would all be known by Kate, I'm surprised you even felt the need to ask.

If you told her that story, she would undoubtedly believe it, but she would think it was about the buff young princes of the House of Windsor. And I'm not kidding.

Remember History isn't her subject ... nor English, Geography ... etc etc

But all that is irrelevant because as a Capital Radio DJ, she has successfully acquired a reputation for her wide and in-depth music knowledge... Kate will know that pop idol 1066, fit trouvère Taillefer sang of Roland's deeds to inflame the men before the titans battled it out (at Hastings, no FA or Pop Idol for the Historic orientated) and later was immortalized in the instant hit "Chanson de Roland", that went into topping the medieval charts in Italy, France and Spain for several centuries. She will know also that this masterpiece is part of the chanson de geste craze, that later was ripped off by cheeky boys Boiardo and Ariosto, whose unrecognizable version "Orlando" was to become another TOTPs winner.
