Optical Audio

So my V+ box and my TV both have optical audio ports on them. I was wondering if there would be any advantage to connecting up an optical audio cable. I have no sound system and it would simply be carrying the audio from the V+, to the TV.

Is there a point to doing this or do I just need this if I have a surround sound system?

Sound quality could be marginally better as you will be feeding a digital audio signal to the tv rather than analogue.

I strongly suspect that both are outputs. In which case no point at all connecting the two.

And in any case if you are using an HDMI cable between the V+ box and TV you are carrying digital audio anyway, exactly the same as the optical connection. The only difference between them is the HDMI uses pulses of electricity and the optical pulses of light. but it makes no difference to the sound which you use.

I think you'll probably find they are both optical outputs which are designed to connect to a sound system.

Ah ok thanks for the help. I'm using HDMI anyway, so there's really no need to do anything.

Seeing as you are looking for better audio quality have you ever thought of a 5.1 system?

I believe 5.1 is available on selected programming via V+, in addition to this, if you have a DVD player there is a good chance you'll be able to listen to DD5.1/DTS from this as well.
