I am connecting a sony vaio fw111e laptop to a sony bravia kdl40w4000 lcd.tv. using the hdmi outlet on the laptop to the hdmi input3 on the tv. with a view to streaming hd pay per view feed to the tv via broadband. both tv and laptop are new, my knowledge is very limited. are there specific settings i need to access? if i try to plug and play, selecting outlet hdmi3 in the tv, there is no recognition between the two, the two can be linked via pc connection. this is neither hdmi or sound(i know i'd need a 3mm audio for sound).
can anyone help me through this connection?

You probably have to enable your HDMI output on your monitor. On my monitor its Fn+F5. Its not a sony tho. Have a look at your manual it will be something similar.

Checked your manual online and its Fn+F7. (P32) ftp://ftp.vaio-link.com/pub/Manuals/...1/FW1_H_EN.pdf

P80 of the manual says you should be able to get sound thru HDMI. P81 has some advice if you don't.

Have you an amp to connect to for surround sound? Does it have HDMI input? If so connect laptop to amp and amp to tv via HDMI to get surround sound and video to your tv.
