Hi,

Can someone please detail what a BT Line test does.

Although I have noise on my phone line the test says 'No Fault Found'

Many thanks.

it basically tests to see if there is a NTE5 at the end of the line(which proves continuity, i.e dis faults).
checks for partial/rectified loops(causes noise and bell not ringing problems, also no dial tone)
then checks the resistance of each leg to earth and battery(also causes noisy faults).
it also tests the capacitance of each leg(i.e possible hr dis or contact fault).
could go into more detail but my fingers would tire.
basically the test system was designed to test the line for pstn services and as a result unless your experiancing a complete loss of service, or very very noisy line it will usually always line test o.k.

could you give a bit more detail on your noise fault? i.e do you have b/band? is it noisy continuously or intermittant? is it noisy at the test socket of the nte5 with a standard corded phone(nothing else plugged in)? is it only noisy when the b/band router is connected to the line?

I was just interested in what a line test does, from what you say, as long as the system sees your NTE then it's 'no fault found'. Which is very much what I thought.

I suffer from intermittent crackling on the line, plus the BB modem keeps dropping it's connection which can result in speed reduction. Thought the problem was fix when the BT guy re terminated the line in the green cab down the street in July, but the problem is back again, looks like wind and rain has caused the problem to return. This to me suggests a infrastructure issue.

BT are now going to check the cabling from my house to the telegraph pole across the road, they need a lift for this as the pole carries electricity as well.
I am pleased to say that BT see no issues with my side of the NTE

Thanks for answering my question.

Sometimes a clue to noise can be an imbalance on the amount of charge each wire can hold. Not a good measure but sometimes the test system will say line tests ok but if the balance is 10 uf or more it will normally be noisy.

I my experience these are some of the hardest to locate and cure.
