I love em and eat a few each US visit. It brings back memories of when I lived there. Obviously, the corned beef here isnt quite the same .

Does anyone know of an alternative that we might have here that's similar?

See sandwich here.

You know... I just saw you can use pastrami but would prefer the real thing.

I thought they used Pastrami? You can get that in most supermarkets although you may be best off going to a deli.

I think that's what I'm going to have to use but the original ones I had were corned beef. I remember being freaked out as I was expecting our corned beef!

he he, that would be quite a different experience

I'm not too sure, but I think the main difference is that pastrami is more heavily spiced and has the peppered coating.

Have you had one from Stage Deli? They are immense.

That freaked me out too this first time I had a "corned beef" sandwich in the US. It was nothing like Fray Bentos or Courtina! It was more like a very thinly sliced cured beef.

Rick Stein gave a recipe for traditional Corned Beef in his Food Heroes series.

Still, probably not the same as deli type Pastrami or Corned Beef though.

Got to go to New York for one. It's not the same anywhere else.

Point of information: Reubens are not limited to New York. My dad introduced me to the sandwich in Oklahoma. I've ordered them in Texas as well. I suspect they are available nationwide.
Nice to know the U.S. is known for something besides McDonald's and Kentucky Fried Chicken.

I had one in Vegas that was as good as the New York ones I've had.

well, I'm going to give it a try for lunch tomorrow seen as I'm on my own. I'll see if I can get pastrami with less peppers but there's so much BAD pastrami out there.

I'll let you know
