No! Looks better than their earlier effort. I used to work at Sony Music and was given one Sony's first efforts at an ebook reader to look at overnight. That must have been about 1995ish. It was about the size of a portable mini-disc player though a bit thicker and took small discs. I seem to remember looking at an encyclopedia on it. Never saw one again! Anyone remember them?

Got mine today. Installed the eBook Library software from the CD before connecting it for the first time and had no trouble with Windows detecting it. Very nice device from what I've seen so far and refreshes pages a lot quicker than older models.

I asked this question in other sections with no luck, I wonder if you guys here can help.

I am considering getting a Sony Reader this month but as I know nothing about ebooks I have some questions.

1) As far as i'm aware this will work with the Mac and appear as a mass storage device so I can just drag and drop ebooks onto it like an MP3 player?

2) My problem is alot of ebooks kicking about are .lit (MS Format) so I'm looking for the best program to convert this to a more universal format? (or atleast one that works with the sony device)

3) Also what's the best place to buy ebooks, i'm looking for a good range of books at a good price with preferably no drm?

4) I think the biggest Memory Stick Duo the unit can take is 8GB, where is the cheapest place to buy this and are the newer Mark2 memory stick duos compatible? (best I found is this SanDisk 8GB for £34.99 free delivery - http://www.play.com/Electronics/Elec...o/Product.html)

Thanks in advance.

Gormy

EDIT:

In answer to question 2, I found a program for the Mac and Windows called Stanza, It's free and does conversions very quickly.

I also found a website that can convert HTML to epud - http://www.bookglutton.com/api

Waterstones seem to have a reasonable selection of ebooks on offer. I'm a bit concerned that they are indicating that the prices are introductory offers though, because if they raise them I sure won't be buying from them.

http://www.mobileread.com/ seems like a good site for information relating to ebooks, so any questions relating to the Sony Reader might get better responses on their forums.

As far as i'm aware all the specs say is that the software supplied doesn't work with the mac.

Assuming it mass storage then it should work fine in a drag and drop capacity, ofcoarse I'm not 100% sure of this.

Just tried putting a book onto the Reader using my MacBook and it does indeed appear as a mass storage device and I just needed to drag the book into the 'Books' folder on the device and once disconnected the book appeared in the Reader as normal. I guess this will only work properly for non-DRM files though.

I'm absolutely delighted with mine and had no problems loading it in Vista. I love books and this will never replace them; that said, I became so used to reading a novel on it on the train on Friday that I unconsciously found myself physically trying to turn the page. Fab gadget!

Have you noticed that the bookmark button turns down the corner of the page? Made me smile anyway as it's not something book lovers generally like people doing to their books, but in this case it can't do any harm .

Does anyone know where the cheapest place to buy one is? They all seem to be around the £199.99 mark.

Are they actually comfortable to use? I really like the idea, but can't think of anything worse than reading a book from a computer screen, gives me headaches on my laptop.

They use e-ink - a new technology which only uses power when the display is changing, so the battery life is measured in page turns rather than hours - you could display the same page indefinitely. It looks pretty much like normal ink on paper and so is much less fatiguing to read than an LCD display.

Despite being impressed by the technology, I'm waiting for the PRS700, which will add LED front-lighting (for reading in the dark!), and a touch screen + virtual keyboard for searching.
