Cauldron marinated tofu
kimindex
07-09-2008
We're having problems getting this at the moment from the usual sources (supermarket and local health food shops). Anyone know of any mail order online shops you can get if from? Many thanks!

(It's the marinated stuff in particular, not the other types of Cauldron tofu).

I would have thought Goodness Direct would have it, but I've just had a look and it's not there. (Only the plain and smoked varieties, I think) They have this one though, no idea what it's like...

Sorry I can't think of anywhere else

I really hope Cauldron haven't stopped making it!

They definitely haven't stopped making it - I've just been invited to be on their tasting panel for a whole new range of marinated tofu things. I'll let you know what they come up with!

Thanks for looking, Snowfairy and, yes, that sounds interesting, Elanor. Perhaps that's why it's hard to find at the moment. I wonder what sort of stuff they're going to come up with.

I've never seen Clearspot Tofu before. Don't know whether it's worth the risk.

I haven't actually seen it in the shops for a while, now you mention it. I wonder if they're relaunching or something.

They have changed the packaging recently, I've got some in the freezer which I bought a few weeks ago with the new design.

I saw it in the fridge at Asda tonight. I noticed it because I saw this thread yesterday It was definitely the marinated one as well.

I've seen the marinated it in both Sainbury's and Tesco in the last week.

I have trouble getting the Cauldron Smoked tofu - I think only Booth's supermarkets have it these days, everyone else seems to have dropped it.

I'll have a look in Tesco's again. Perhaps they've re-stocked it. Abel's don't deliver to my area. Thanks!

Have you tried Holland & Barrett? I've only had it once (and loved it - must get some more!) but that's where I found it. They had the plain and marinated varieties, too.

Failing that, Goodness Direct stock it, amongst several other varieties.

Oh, that wasn't much help then, sorry! Anyway, I've just looked on their website again and noticed that no brand name is given for the tofu - I was assuming it to be Cauldron . I've just phoned them to enquire, and it's actually the Clearspot brand they sell which Goodness Direct also have as I mentioned above. (I think I'll try it soon though, it might be equally good!)

I take it you've already tried Holland & Barrett? Ocado online are showing the marinated Cauldron and the plain, if that's any help...

Thanks for all the effort, Snowfairy! I'll have a look at Ocado. I might look out for the Clear Sport to try it. H&B didn't have it the last time I looked but I'll retry. I just assumed they'd run out but I'll ask next time. Meanwhile, our local Chinese supermarket does some good tofu (not marinated).

Hi, i hope the OP doesn't mind me hijacking this thread

I'm after tips on how to cook tofu so it becomes spongy/chewy.

My chinese takeaway sells an amazing tofu in chilli sauce and the tofu is in chunks about 3 inches square but i can never cook it the same way. I've tried grilling it and deep frying too but it's always too soft.

I guess i should ask the takeaway next time i order

Thanks

I definitely saw this in our local Asda yesterday

Have you tried the marinated Tofu mentioned in this thread. I really dislike the regular tofu, as it's just....sloppy and revolting.

But I LOVE the marinated one. It has a really nice firm texture and tastes lovely. I even eat it cold out of the pack. Worth a go - I can't manage to cook the other stuff properly either!

To firm up tofu, freeze it before use. The longer it spends in the freezer, the spongier it'll be.

When we buy Chinese tofu from the Chinese shop (the already deep fried stuff that you normally get from takeaways), we just use a little oil and fry it in garlic, chilli and soy sauce and then add it to whatever dish. Probably not too healthy but nice! I never use the soft stuff either.
