Why can't I buy single mushrooms? Lol, I know that sounds crazy but a punnet is just too much (which I was forced to buy). I used a few and now I've had to throw the rest away.

I couldn't buy a single Onion either, a bag of three only.

You must be shopping in the wrong places. I bought a single onion yesterday, and 6 loose mushrooms, from my local Co-op. They had prepacked or loose to choose from. However, I am not so sure that the larger supermarkets do loose produce because they really want you to buy as much as possible.

You need to look for the smaller supermarkets - alternatively a greengrocers, because they certainly would not just offer prepacked food, in fact most greengrocers don't even have prepacked food!

Ha yes, I live in the City Centre. My choices of Supermarket are Sainsbury's Local, Tesco Metro, Somerfield & Iceland. No Grocers around for miles! Typical.

As you say, typical. If it helps, mushrooms will keep a few days if you transfer them out of their plastic packaging and put them into a paper bag. I take mine out of the polythene bag that is customary in supermarkets these days and transfer them to a paper bag and pop them in the fridge.

Most of the Local/Express stores around here only have the pre packaged stuff e.g. 3 big onions or 6 medium ones, 3 mixed peppers or 2 long red ones.

The main stores usually have a better choice and include loose items.

You live in Liverpool and in the city centre? Have you tried going into St John's Market? There are loads of fruit and veg stalls in there. Yes, St Johns may be chav central but it is just about bearable for fresh fruit and veg at much cheaper prices than any tesco metro/sainsburys local.

No greengrocers in a city centre, shows how sad our shopping habits have become that we rely to much on supermarkets as a one stop shop.

I've made the decision to support the small independant outlets rather than the large corporate whores. It's a far more enjoyable shopping experience.

It also means I can buy one mushroom or one onion if I so desire.

3 onions is ok anyway - onions are good for 2/3 weeks

but haven't you got any shops with a loose veg counter?
