VOD Copy protection
seacam

Hello,

Tiscali black box without the PVR, I have forgotten the make, could some one tell me?

Macrovision on Tiscali's VOD channels, what kind is it?

Macrovision seems to be more and more a generic term for copy protection.

I was wondering what Tiscali employed to prevent the copying of their VOD or other broadcasts, ( what type/kind of macrovision )?

A bit dodgy, wanting to know isn't it? I mean usually people who ask have a less than moral intent.

Stone me, can no one ask questions anymore and do you have any answers to my questions?

Hello Logan,

Thank you but that is not the box I have.

Mine is about the same size, black, with a large square green light in the middle with no PVR.

It is Macrovision, go and read about it on Wikipedia.
AFAIK it's a high frequency signal meant to mess up picture scanning. VCRs can not get a lock on it without filtering the signal. (Not limited to VCRs)

In the USA there were some VCRs without Automatic Gain Control which could do it but these were outlawed and all VCRs sold after a certain date required the AGC electronics to be built in.

Also in an interesting note. The CP on old VHS units could be recorded onto Betamax, but then the Betamax would carry the signal onward so it could not go back to VHS.

What happens with the PVR then - are you not allowed to record from that to DVD or whatever?

Well macrovision is not embedded in the tv signal, it is turned on and off by hardware in the T+ box. So if your content is not a VOD source it is likely that macrovision will be turned off.

So if you recorded the news or your favourite show or even a film off a broadcast channel you can probably record that out to DVD or VHS. But On Demand content is normally protected so recording that by analogue means is far more difficult.

Just type in 'macrovision remover' in to Google

Is macrovision applied to BBC replay, 4oD and all catch up VOD as well as pay-per-view VOD?

Eg could I record a missed episode of Holby City from replay without it being scrambled, or not?

Not seen it on BBC replay or 4oD.
Can't comment about 'all catch up VOD' .
yes, I can record from BBC replay, no problem.

You would kind of expect it to be on pay VOD.
(not used pay VOD though)
