Good digital camera for less than £100
Tartan_girl
08-09-2008
Hi all,

I'm looking for recommendations for a good digital camera for under £100, I'm not looking for anything particularly swanky, its just for taking general shots etc, so a capable all-rounder would be good!

Does anyone have any suggestions of particular cameras or makes I should be investigating?

Many thanks!

Thanks very much, I'll do some research on it!

Only trouble really with that camera is it runs of normal/rechargeable AA batteries as opposed to a in camera rechargeable lithium ion battery. In my experience cameras that run from normal batteries use up the power very quickly which is very inconvenient if you are out somewhere and run out a battery power after only a few pictures.

well all i can say is that i took over 100 photos today on the normal batteries that came with the camera & that includes about 25 with the flash & it's still going stong well pleased with it
i understand what your saying as my old camera was like that

See, that's not too bad. My sister had a camera where you could only take max of about 20 photos before the batteries were dead. and they were decent batteries too.

i have just checked i have taken 118 daylight photos & 23 night time photos & the battery is still going strong as i said i am well impressed with this camera

if the opening poster needs help choosing this go to qvc website then cameras the look at the reviews on this site as well as the price they are charging

i would say if your looking for a decent camera & not wanting to spend a fortune this is the one & no i don't work for fuji

I like Fuji cameras and that has got a really good optical zoom on it. It isn't often you see one that big on budget/compact cameras. So if the battery it decent then it is a good buy. I am quite tempted myself actually.

I would recommend you sony ericsson k800i which is a cyber-shot digital camera, small and sophistcated feature-packed 3g phone. This is having 3.2 megapixel camera with autofocus, image and video stabilizer. It's about £110.60 but I think u can increase yr budget a little bit for better results. U can see on http://www.blueunplugged.com/p.aspx?p=117893

Three points to make here:

1. The Sony camera phone is OK for snaps in good light. It's nowhere near as good as even a fairly basic compact, dedicated, digital camera. The lens isn't as good, the sensor isn't as good and the flash isn't as good.

2. Batteries. Everyone thinks Duracell and the likes are the best to use. Wrong. Use good, high capacity rechargeables. The way they discharge means they'll normally last a lot longer than a Duracell in a digital camera. Using AA batteries can be handy as they are pretty much universally available so if you run out of batteries on holiday it's easy to pick up replacements. (Even if they probably won't last very long)

3. The Fuji linked to in post #2. It's an older model now but it's a decent pro-sumer super zoom camera ..... especially at that price. But ..... if it's a pocket friendly compact you want, thats not it. It's a fairly bulky camera compared to a standard compact. Not saying don't buy it, just be aware that it's a bulkier model.

Fully agree with sancheeez here, the quality you get from a digital camera is considerably better than phone cameras.

Best Cameras have this phone for a little bit cheaper at £94.99 and TrustedReviews rate it very highly in their review of the camera, which if you read it should provide you with more knowledge of what exactly it can/can't do!

thanks all for your replies, its really useful! As one of the previous posters said, I'm looking for quite a compact camera, so anything too bulky is a no-no...any other suggestions then I'm happy to hear them!

Well, I do like the Fuji compacts.

They produce nice pictures and, for a compact, are excellent in low light so good for nights out and suchlike - stronger flash than most compacts too. Nice and compact and the built in rechargeable battery in my little F20 lasts forever! 4 days in Barcelona, filled the memory card completely, using flash, video etc and it only used about 1/3 of the available battery power! Amazing!

You can pick up the updated F40fd (higher resolution, fd face detection which the F20 didn't have, and a few other bits and bobs) for a very reasonable £85 now.

(Decent online store. I bought a £200 camera from them ... no problems whatsoever)

Review of the F40fd here ...

Canon do nice compacts as well but I'm not so familiar with them and not sure if they do anything quite as good as the F40fd for £85.

Oh .... and you can pick up a 1gb XD card for it for much cheapness as play.com ...

That appears to be a very good price, I did some searching on it also and found that buyAcamera were the cheapest, with next cheapest being 7dayshop.com (94.99) and then Amazon (£99.99) in case for whatever reason you do not wish to purchase from buyAcamera.

You can get a Nikon CoolPix L16 from Argos for £59

http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Produc...7C10198098.htm

If you get AA batteries, gor for the Uniross HYBRIO ones, they're great.

Nikon fell a little behind their competitors with their more recent compacts.

The L16 is OK (have a look at the review for the L18 on Steves Digicams) but no more than that.

If I had £100 to spend on a compact I'd spend the extra and get the F40fd every time.
